You could get the same thing if you don't trade for him. While no one really knows how comp pick formula is computed, it is the fact that you couldn't afford to sign the player that is how they figure it. So, provided he signs a big deal, it shouldn't matter how we get him. Donks have gotten high comp picks for people they sign in FA.
The problem that I would have is how do we use him. The front office still seems to like Liuget, so that is Richardson's starting 3 Tech spot. Neither Liuget or Richardson is as good as Mebane, although Mebane is not going to be on the field for 40+ snaps a game. I'm not against the idea, just I think it minimizes his production, which keeps his leaving price down, which means not much compensation (pick), and because he is behing Liuget, he is certain to leave after a year or two.
