Chargers 4rd Round Pick: Rayshawn Jenkins, S, Miami

    Overview

One of 16 siblings, Jenkins has had to fight for everything he gets throughout his life -- and it shows with his competitive spirit on the field. The former high school quarterback and state track hurdles winner has started at least two games in each of his four active seasons. He started twice as a true freshman (27 tackles, one interception, three pass breakups), then all but one contest in 2013 (46 tackles, three INT, five PBU). Jenkins suffered a herniated disc while weightlifting before the 2014 season, leading him to have surgery and redshirt the year. He started seven games in his comeback junior season (52 tackles, 2.5 for loss, three INT, five PBU) and then earned third-team All-ACC recognition from league media for this 2016 efforts (76 tackles, 4.5 for loss, two INT, seven PBU).
    Analysis

Strengths Looks like a Miami safety with good size, long arms and an aggressive field demeanor. Looks to punish pass catchers over the middle and running backs looking to finish their runs against him. Has size and physicality to handle run support in the box. Gets wide as a tackler and fires from his hips. Does a nice job of reading keys when stepping downhill to fill his run fits. Might be able to handle coverage against matchup tight ends. Play speed is adequate for what he will be asked to do. Can chase and challenge the deep throws. Played some receiver in high school and shows that timing in his high-point challenges. Has soft hands to take it away when he's in position.

Weaknesses Doesn't make enough plays on the ball. Instincts are average and route anticipation needs work. Likes to see ball released before making commitment to close. Inefficient movement from high safety. Plays it too safe and needs to squeeze routes and take more chances. Average athlete. Opens hips from his backpedal before he needs to declare. NFL post routes could be a lot for him to handle. Can be sluggish in man coverage transitions, giving up too much separation. Comes downhill hot and will fly into tackle attempts at poor angles that result in misses. Needs to run into and through ball carrier rather than leaping from distance.

    Draft Projection Round 3-4

Sources Tell Us "He's not perfect, but come on. He's big, fast and strong. I mean, if you don't want that then I don't know what to say." -- NFC East Coast area scout
Bottom Line A commanding, aggressive presence on the back-end, Jenkins loves being part of "The U" and attempts to honor the history of the safety position at that school every time he steps on the field. His instincts and closing burst to the ball are just average and he will have to earn his way up the depth chart to get a shot as a two-deep safety with some box ability.

      Overview

Few programs can match Miami's track record of producing NFL-caliber defensive backs and in Jenkins and fellow senior Corn Elder in the 2017 draft, "The U's" pipeline is still running strong.
Though he was "only" graded as a three star recruit, Jenkins earned attention from some of the top programs in the country, turning down the likes of Alabama and Florida State to sign with the Hurricanes. He saw action in 10 games as a true freshman, starting two games, and finishing with 27 tackles and an interception. He became one of the leaders of the defense as a sophomore, starting 12 of 13 games and ranking third on the team with three interceptions and fourth with 44 tackles, including 29 solos.
Jenkins suffered a back injury during offseason weight-lifting, however, which forced him to undergo surgery and miss the entire 2014 season. Though he played in all 13 games a year later, Jenkins struggled with consistency, starting just seven. Despite the limited playing time, he recorded a then-career high 52 tackles with another three interceptions.
Jenkins' best season at Miami was his final one. He earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors in 2016 with 76 tackles, including 4.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also recorded seven pass breakups and another two interceptions, giving him nine over his career. The veteran of 49 games (including 33 starts) earned an invitation to the Senior Bowl, where his prototypical blend of size and penchant for big hits turned heads.
STRENGTHS: Jenkins possesses excellent size for the position with broad shoulders, a tapered middle and a thick lower half. His experience and time in the film room show up in his diagnosis, as Jenkins trusts his eyes, attacking downhill in run support and on underneath passes. He takes aggressive (but not reckless) angles in downfield pursuit. He looks to intimidate opponents with fierce hits, lowering his shoulder and creating big collisions, often (but not always) wrapping his arms for the secure stop. He is an experienced blitzer, showing good timing to attack the line of scrimmage, as well as the leg drive and hand strength to take on and shed blocks. In coverage, Jenkins shows good lateral agility and balance to change direction and accelerates smoothly, showing above average top end speed for the position. Jenkins possesses at least fair ballskills with nine career interceptions, showing good body control, timing and hand-eye coordination to make quarterbacks think twice about challenging him.
WEAKNESSES: Jenkins played with more consistency in 2016 but still is not the sum of his parts. Too often Jenkins is reliant upon his closing speed and explosive hits to knock ballcarriers to the ground, failing to wrap up. He is so focused on leveling runners that he occasionally ducks his head just before contact, with some disappointing missed tackles on tape. Jenkins' willingness to lead with his shoulder got him kicked out of the Sun Bowl (Washington State) to end the 2015 season and he nearly was suspended again for targeting with a question hit on the sideline against North Carolina in 2016. Jenkins' over-aggressive tendencies show up in coverage, as well, where he can be caught peeking into the backfield and left flat-footed and trailing against double-moves. The back surgery which sidelined him for the entire 2014 season will require a close look at the Combine.
IN OUR VIEW: Teams are willing to look past occasional mistakes as true playmakers are rarely cautious. Jenkins has big play ability, as well as the size and speed to project as a possible starter at the next level. While perhaps not as polished as this year's top safeties, his potential upside makes Jenkins among the more intriguing of the so-called "second tier" options.

      Draft Scout Player News
08/15/14 - Miami DB Rayshawn Jenkins (back) won't play in 2014...Miami released its first depth chart of the preseason on Thursday, along with confirmation that junior safety Rayshawn Jenkins will miss the entire 2014 season. Jenkins first broke the news on his Facebook account Wednesday night, only telling friends and followers that he would miss the year. Hurricanes coach Al Golden elaborated Thursday with details. Jenkins started 12 games at safety for the Hurricanes in 2013, recording three interceptions and ranking in the top five on the team with 46 tackles.
He missed all of spring drills with an undisclosed injury, but until this week he was thought to be in the mix for a starting job in 2014. Dallas Crawford and Deon Bush were listed as the starting safeties on the depth chart released Thursday. The quarterback competition, arguably the No. 1 topic of conversation for Miami fans, will take center stage between now and the season opener after Al Golden listed senior transfer Jake Heaps and freshman Brad Kaaya as co-starters. It is possible (or maybe even likely?) that Golden and offensive coordinator James Coley will keep the competition going right up until the Hurricanes' season opener at Louisville on Labor Day. - Chip Patterson, CBSSports.com

        113. Los Angeles Chargers: Reyshawn Jenkins, S – Miami

People though the Bolts would go after a safety in the first, but didn’t. Now they get a tough player that makes plays with versatility in the back. Grade: B

Seems to be a player in the Kam chancellor mold. Has the physical traits you look for, will require some development to reach his potential (sounds like most every 4th rounder). Probably an instant impact on ST.

Missed 2014 season due to back surgery.

                      --

Miami will be without one of its key defensive contributors of the 2013 season in the defensive backfield. Safety Rayshawn Jenkins is scheduled for back surgery on Monday, and the rehab time will cost Jenkins the entire football season.

Jenkins started in 12 games for Miami last season, recording three interceptions and 46 tackles. News of an injury was first broken by Jenkins on Wednesday on his Facebook page. In a status update, Jenkins announced he will not be playing this season. The injury to his back that triggered the need for surgery reportedly was suffered during weight lifting exercises. Jenkins attempted to continue practicing through pain earlier in the week but eventually needed to receive medical treatment.

The Miami Herald suggests Jenkins will have to spend the next six months in rehab following surgery on Monday, which means the 2014 season is out of the question, but a return for the spring seems to be in the cards.

Tough he started 12 games for Miami in 2014, Jenkins was most recently listed behind Dallas Crawford on Miami’s depth chart.
