Official 2018 Draft Thread- We Have the 17th Pick

There are 7 teams with 3 wins behind Cleveland (0-9), SF (1-9_, and the NYG (1-8). We are currently picking 7th. Looks like there will be some fierce competition for the 4th through 10th spots which makes a huge difference on what player is available.

That 4-10 list is also huge when you think that we don't know what Juniors will be coming out. Until you know that, it is not clear if we get someone who is at a position of need that high.

As long we're Top 10 we should be fine. QBs going early, will let the Elite OT to land to us. Matt McGlinchy would be the best.

If you look at the teams currently in the top 10, many already have QB. Even the ones that don't Browns, have 2 picks and might stay put with Kizer. WHo knows how that plays out, but the point is it's not as clear as it could be.

The big thing that starts to worry me is that some of the best QB may go back to school, taking them off the table completely. Then teams would have to go for other positions, AND we might not have a chance to get a QB of the future ourselves.

I fear going on a winning streak and picking 19th. Disaster.

The experts are saying up to 6 QB possible 1st round picks and let me say off the top I am not a fan of any Big-12 QB they don't translate well to the pros so no to (Baker Mayfield & Mason Rudolph).

Look at Big-12 past QBs Johnny Manzel, Brandon Weeden, Bryce Petty, Colt McCoy, RGIII, Chase Daniel, Blaine Gabbert, Josh Freeman, and going back to Vine Young. I say Hell no to the Big-12 they are so wide open in there style of play it is easy to make the reads in college and put up big numbers.

Some of the teams above us might need a quarterback but there are no guarantees that there will be a run on quarterbacks. I don't think there is a Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota among the 2018 quarterback draft class (Darnold aside since he's apparently returning to USC). They all have a bit of a project about them. Now that's not to say they can't or won't develop into good quarterbacks but if Cleveland passed on Wentz, I wouldn't be surprised if they passed on this year's top quarterbacks with their first of their two first round picks. Likewise I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants and Bengals decide to look outside the first round for competition for their current starter, and the Broncos might go for a veteran. So potentially we might see a run on the non-QBs which might force a decision from our front office. Do we draft one of the projects and sit them behind Rivers? Or do we go for a non-QB and stick with Rivers? I suspect we could panic and draft one of these quarterbacks if none have been selected by the time we are on the clock.

Here is the current draft order for the top 10 picks:

Cleveland - may or may not think Kiser is the answer at QB
SF - just traded for Garapalo
NY Giants - definitely need a QB
Colts - who knows what they think of Luck's health and the cap implications of keeping vs cutting him
Broncos - is Lynch the answer or do they sign a vet?
              Bears - no QB needed
              Chargers - ???
Tampa Bay - no QB needed
              Bengals - ???
              Texans - no QB needed

I say go OT/DT or Safety with the 1st pick the QB may fall to round two in the 2018 draft (just don't draft Baker Mayfield or Mason Rudolph)

I'd agree but for the safety option. Then again...

The big problem I always have is that while there are guys who might carry high grades, it is only worth drafting them that high if they really are a franchise QB. What makes a QB a franchise QB?

PS Luck isn't going anywhere. He is going to cost $9.6 mil dead money even if he is a post june 1st cut. The important thing is that they would save $15 mil, but when people hear about $10 million in dead cap, they usually freak out. Plus, he might really be able to come back, and then they will give someone a franchise QB for nothing, which would make the Colts look even worse.
