I question his ability to run between the tackles in the NFL and how much pounding he can take. Slight finesse backs do not make top 10 picks if I am running a draft board. I do not think he will be as unproductive as Tavon Austin, and I think he went to the best situation possible in that offence. The read option with Cam could be interesting. He was the one player/position I absolutely did not want the chargers to draft in the first round.
PS - Sproles Seems to be lasting as a small back in the NFL

as to Sproles....yes he has excellled for a long time as a "small" back. But he has never had to take the pounding of a lead back. He has been mainly a change of pace and 3rd down guy. He also is a pocket hercules build at 5'6" and 190. He was also drafted in the 5th rd.....not top 10. An excelent specialist amd special team guy. I would never spend a first rd pick on a 3rd down back, which is how i see McCafferey. I could be wrong, but the reasons i would not draft McCaffery in the top 10 to me are valid and i would live with the result either way.
i was also on this/old board saying Bush would not be worth a top pick when everyone had him #1 and i took a lot of heat for saying he would be a Metcalf type of 3rd down back and could not take the pounding of a lead back.Last edited by Panamamike; 06-19-2017, 11:48 PM.

but I hear ya, McCaffery (rookie of the year favorite) should have been the pick instead of Williams once Adams was off the board.
I stated we don't get great production from our top draft picks, which lead to a 5 win season last year.
Are you suggesting we'll only lose 5 games this coming season? Stranger things have happened .

I don't think McCaffery would have been a ROY candidate for us. Our OL has a lot of work to do to even be average. McCaffery needs a lot of work in blitz protection and route running. I think the situation in Carolina (their offense, their OL and their defense) is probably a better fit for him than we are. He should be a better change of pace back for them, than a Woodhead replacement. In time, that would probably reverse, as ultimately, I think McCaffery would be a better slot WR/3rd down back than regular RB.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't have taken him, just he is going to take a while to develop those skills. I think too many people get hung up on the idea that a top draft pick MUST be massively productive right away. If they are great, but as long as they show something, I am fine with players who develop a little later. Natrone Means (arguably the 2nd best RB the Chargers have ever had) only split time as a rookie with Marion Butts. And that is at a position that is conducive to being productive early.
Williams should be fine. We have enough depth at WR that we don't need him to be a day 1 starter. I expect if he can play some on ST, that he should get some playing time from the start of the season. Get him on the field and they can let him develop a bit more slowly, get some catches here and there and by the end of the season, he will probably get some decent playing time.

I get the neck injury thing, but how many backup WR are active on any given week if they don't play ST? If he doesn't play ST, then he has to play enough minutes as the starter to justify activating someone else, which given how far behind he is, probably won't happen.
If you are a backup in the NFL, you play ST if you are active. If you don't play ST (as a backup) then you are a scratch just about every week. Hell, there are starters on every team that play on ST.
