    Expansion draft

Saw something today on NFL network talking hypothetically if there was a expansion draft today what 3 players would you protect? ( For you younger fans this actually happened when Jacksonville and Carolina entered the league).

My 3 would be Boss, Hayward and Rivers. My only hesitation with Rivers would be his age, but you don't win in this league without a QB.
It was a tough call between Hayward and Verett but injury history won out. Same as to why I didn't choose Allen.

Ok....except, that is NOT how the expansion drafts worked.

When HOU was the only expansion team, the rules of their draft were:

Each NFL team listed five players that the Texans could select,[6][7][8] and the Texans were required to claim either 30 players[6][7][8] or $27.2 million in contracts (38% of the 2002 salary cap).[7][8][12] After the Texans selected a player from an existing team, that team could remove a player from their remaining list.[7][8][12] If a second player was taken, the existing team could then pull back its remaining three players.[7][8][12] However, teams were not required to remove players from the draftable list, resulting in three Jets and three Jaguars being drafted to the Texans. The Texans were prohibited from selecting a player from a team and trading the player back to that club.[12]

With 2 teams the rules were as follows:

The Panthers and the Jaguars selected the first players in franchise history

The 1995 National Football League expansion draft was held on February 15, 1995.[1]The two new expansion teams, the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguarsalternated picks from lists of unprotected players from existing franchises. Existing NFL teams made six players available,[2] and the new teams were required to pick a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 42 players. Each time one of the expansion franchises selected a player from an existing team, that team was then permitted to remove a remaining player from its list of available players.

In addition to these draft picks, the Panthers received the first pick in the 1995 NFL Draft, and the Jaguars were given the second pick.

The Panthers ultimately picked 35 players, while the Jaguars picked 36.

NOTE: in each situation, the expansion draft was held ahead of the NFL draft, so this year's rooks would not apply, and this best would have been hypothesized before the draft

Under no circumstance would the owners allow an expansion system that only let the team protect 3 players. That is not even remotely plausible in today's NFL. The owners want to jetison over paid vets or guys with abnormal risk, not load up the expansion team for a run at a championship; which would certainly happen if u let any competent GM pick from a list of players that would result from the method you describe.

Trivia Fact: The only player taken from San Diego during the expansion draft was Darren Carrington- Safety (started in Super Bowl XXIX) He was selected by Jacksonville.
Fun Fact: Also taken by Jacksonville was Harry Colon- CB for the Detroit Lions.
