    Pre-Training Camp Charger Power Ranking

Blurbs found either post draft or just before Training Camp

    --

PFT preseason power rankings No. 24: Los Angeles Chargers

Posted by Charean Williams on July 14, 2017, 9:00 AM EDT

Biggest positive change:Melvin Gordon, if he stays healthy, figures to be a big part of the offense.

Biggest negative change:Coaching thermometer: . . . Philip RiversHow they can prove us wrong: The Chargers have more talent than their five victories last season suggest. Joey Bosa and Melvin Gordon are rising stars, and the addition of first-round pick Mike Williams could give Philip Rivers a feature receiver. If Keenan AllenAntonio Gates has anything left, Rivers will have more options than he has had in a few years with tight end Hunter Henry having had a solid rookie season and receiver Tyrell Williams coming off a 1,000-yard receiving season. Rivers, 35, passed for more than 4,000 yards for the fourth consecutive season, but he will have to cut down on his 21 interceptions. The defense, which is switching to the 4-3, should improve with Gus Bradley running that side of the ball. Bosa and Melvin Ingram, who had 18.5 sacks over the past two seasons, will get after the quarterback, and cornerbacks Casey Hayward and Jason Verrett

    13.

    Los Angeles Chargers (5-11) - Previously: 13.
I've seen the Chargers in the top 10 of some power rankings, which is more optimistic than where I stand. San Diego (I refuse to acknowledge them as Los Angeles) is a good team when things are going right, but when has that been the case? The Chargers are always nursing tons of injuries, and things are just seemingly getting worse because they signed Russell Okung, who tends to be hurt more often than not. That said, perhaps things will change as far as the offense is concerned, given that the Chargers drafted Mike Williams and a couple of talented guards.

      RANK 24:

Already moving these guys up. Receiver Mike Williams (Round 1, No. 7 overall) could make a difference from Day 1, specifically for Philip Rivers. The franchise QB has been throwing to backups, other teams' leftovers and "upside" guys for too long. Tyrell Williams has potential, but Keenan Allen has been hurt and the team has given the Stevie Johnsons of the world too many looks. Going beyond WR, the fact the front office is helping its 35-year-old signal caller by fortifying the line up front (three of Los Angeles' seven picks were used on offensive linemen) was encouraging, too. Am I too encouraged if I say the L.A. Chargers could eke out a wild-card spot if -- if -- they stay healthy? Please stay healthy.

        24 Los Angeles Chargers

        AFC West

After the 2016 NFL season, the Chargers moved from San Diego, which had been their home for over 50 years, to Los Angeles. While they will eventually play in Los Angeles, they will play their home games in Carson, California in 2017, inside the StubHub Center. The arena holds only 30,000 fans, which is about half of the capacity that most NFL stadiums hold. With a new city, comes new hope, and Chargers fans have to be excited about the future.

First off, Philip Rivers continues to be an elite quarterback in the NFL, and is on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Coming back in 2017 will be Antonio Gates, who will go down as one of the best tight ends in the history of the league. Hunter Henry has proven to be a great No. 2 tight end, and with a healthy Keenan Allen back, Rivers should have a full compliment of weapons to throw to.

Staying with the wide receivers, it appears that first round selection, Mike Williams may not be ready to play this season due to a back injury. If that is the case, the Bolts are going to need every bit of Allen back at 100 percent. With their second and third round picks, the Chargers bolstered their offensive line with Forrest Lamp and Dan Feeney, both of whom could have been first round choices. Outside of Williams, it has been a very successful offseason for Los Angeles.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Chargers brought back linebacker Melvin Ingram, who is their most important piece of the puzzle at that position. Joey Bosa proved to be every bit worth of the first round selection from a year ago, and is one of the more feared defensive linemen in the division. The Chargers do have a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, but with a tough AFC West schedule, and games against the NFC and AFC East, it is going to be hard for them to reach a Wildcard.

They drafted with the idea of making one last fling with Philip Rivers before he retires, which was the right thing to do. The offensive line will be much improved and adding a big target in Mike Williams will help.

            USATODAY - Pre training camp:
            20 Los Angeles
            Chargers
0-0 1 20 / 21 This year's top worst-to-first candidate? Tough sledding in the AFC West, but a healthy offense could provide fireworks for Year 1 in Los Angeles.

              ESPN.COM, post draft:

              25. Los Angeles Chargers

              2016 record: 5-11
              Post-free agency ranking: No. 25

Every other team in the AFC West is in the top 10. None of their quarterbacks is as good as this team's is. Philip Rivers needs help, and the Chargers got him some with Mike Williams and a couple of guards in the first three rounds of the draft. This team blew a lot of fourth-quarter leads last season; hold half of them and this ranking is way too low.

All the potential to be top 10 if we just stay healthy. On paper now we look like a competitor that could compete with any team IMO and get some wins. Our offense has great skill position guys but untested OL but at least commitment to fix the line through the draft.

Defense we have top end talent in probably 5 to 6 starters which is rare for us. New formerly top DC is encouraging too but its a new but simple defense to install. Great potential to overachieve early. Could be a top 10 defense with healthy players easy.

i would put us on paper around 10-12 on paper right now even with Williams a likely late season impact if he can come back. We have the players to compete today...just need to get on the field and stay on the field.

I hope they at least try to win in exhibition season instead of just go play and have a good time.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

So, you think it is better to have backups who have gotten no playing time and rookies are given zero chance to develop?

I think winning is the #1 way to develop a new fan base. And winning the LA market has to be the #1 mission of the Bolts. Developing players for the long term takes a back seat to winning the LA market over the Rams.
