Good player. He'll probably get a lot of interest from teams

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Hankins has some pass rush ability. He isn't going to show that much as a 34 NT. The position is deliberately aligned so that offenses will double team them. Hard to generate much pass rush if you are being double teamed. He is also much better as a 43 NT than in the 34. If the argument is that our run defense needs to be upgraded, a NT type would be a big help. Utlimately, in the end it will be about price, since we are not really willing to pay top dollar for FA. Of course players who sign with us tend to see the end of their contracts.

The same can be said for traditional LB. They may make a lot of tackles, but even so-so LB make a lot of tackles. Even the elite LB don't make that many splash plays.

When you play NT, you aren't going to put up very good stats. That is the way it is, because you are going to be double or triple teamed. That is the whole point of the 34 D. Let the LB make the play.

The problem with the pay scale for DL is when you pay guys like Hankins, everyone assumes he will come in and be a superstar. The only stat of note is sacks, so that is how he gets judged.

He is being released because the new DC is bringing with him the Dallas cover 2 style D. THey need DL and LB who can run and stunt through gaps. Hankins is not a slashing, penetrating DT. Even when he was with Giants, he can get some movement and pass rush. He just uses power moves and bull rush or defeats blocks and sheds.

I think the reason they are getting rid of him is Al Woods is a cheaper to play the NT spot in the Indy 43 D. HE is lighter and moves better, but is not as powerful. He just fits the mold of what they are looking for in their NT.

They could. The question is why haven't they.

If you're asking if that is what I would do, the answer is yes, I would.

$9 million per season was a little rich for his last contract. But it was basically a 1-year deal. There is very little bonus money after the 1st year. The first year had a roster bonus, but that is off the books now.

Sign Hankins in a similar deal to what Mebane has now, $4 to 5 million. Good money, but not special. Hankins is a good player who adds more inside pass rush and moves laterally better than Mebane does now (about as well as he used to) and is a little more stout. Spend the Liuget money on Pouncey and Boston, and it fills the last of our big needs. Then we can use our draft picks on any spot. Phillion and Rochelle would fill in 3 tech.

Funny you should mention Rochelle. Imo he will be a real surprise being moved inside.

The Indianapolis Colts released defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins.

Hankins, 26, signed a three-year deal worth $27 million in free agency last season. He made 15 starts and finished with 44 tackles and two sacks.

But with the Colts switching to a 4-3 defense that favors speed, the 320-pound, Hankins apparently no longer fit the system.

Hankins would be a huge signing for us if we could snag him, we could trade/cut luiget, cut mebane, and then play rochelle beside him, unless we double dip on dts in the draft. Taking the double teams off bosa is important. Hankins is a guy who could not inly create mismatches and disrupt the pocket but also eat the middle up. Id love to have him

I would let Phillon and Rochelle split time at DT. Some of it will be as the 3 technique spot, some will be the NT spot on passing downs. On the really obvious passing downs, we can mix Bosa and Ingram inside and bring in McCain as part of a 3 DE rush line. The 3 DE rush might not spend that much time on the field, but mixing in smaller pass rushing DT with a big run stuffer should get the inside push, as well as providing the right mix of rest vs playing time.

Suh visiting Rams next. That would be a scary interior DL.
