The Detroit Lions added some competition to their offensive line on Thursday, signing free agent Kenny Wiggins to a two-year contract worth up to $5 million.
Wiggins started 16 games at right guard for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, and spent 2016 playing under new Lions offensive line coach Jeff Davidson.
An undrafted rookie out of Fresno State in 2011, Wiggins did not see his first NFL action until 2014. He was a part-time starter for the Chargers the following season, and a backup under Davidson two years ago.
The Lions return four of their five starters on the offensive line but are not expected to re-sign center Travis Swanson. Graham Glasgow, who split his time between center and left guard last season, could take over as the team's full-time center this fall.
For now, Joe Dahl and Wiggins could vie for the other starting job, though the Lions will reportedly host Wiggins' Chargers teammate, Matt Slauson, on a free-agent visit Friday.
The Lions finished last in the NFL in rushing last season and Matthew Stafford took a career-high took a career-high 47 sacks.
Before signing Wiggins, they made free-agent offers to Joe Berger, the former Michigan Tech standout who's considering retirement, and Bradley Sowell, who re-signed with the Chicago Bears.
Wiggins graded out 70th among 77 qualifying guards by Pro Football Focus last season.
Here's the full breakdown of Wiggins' contract: 2018
