Chargers rescind RFA tender on Chris McCain

Another pass rusher has entered the free-agency market, more than a month after the market opened.

Per a league source, the Chargers have rescinded the restricted free-agency tendered placed on defensive end Chris McCain.

The Chargers applied a right-of-first-refusal tender to McCain, who had five sacks in 2017, his first year with the Chargers. The former Cal defender had joined the Chargers in 2016, as a member of the practice squad.

McCain immediately becomes eligible to sign with another team, once the removal of the $1.907 million tender becomes official.

Even if McCain had signed the tender, the Chargers could have cut him. However, he would have been required to pass through waivers. As it stands, he can sign anywhere he wants.

Not sure why at this late stage they did this unless he has league trouble or leagal trouble. Waiting for the shoe to drop.

Usually, this sort of thing happens after the draft.

Two others were cut earlier this week. They may just be cleaning house.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Definitely need more pass rush, even if McCain was on the squad. He didn't do much in the second half of the year last season. He kind of reminds me of Jyles Tucker. Wasn't real confident that he could replicate what he did last yr. Pass rush. Pass rush. Pass rush. Either up the middle or from the edge. Doesn't matter.

McCain was a big part of the rotation with Bosa and Ingram coming off the edge, at least in the early part of the season. After McCain got hurt, Ingram and Bosa had to play more and more snaps and it was all downhill from there. but there are only so many snaps a single player can provide before their effectiveness starts to fall off. Ingram and Bosa were on the wrong side of that line. They need to play less to be more effective. We need another edge rusher to rotate with them.

1 or 2 more edge rushers to rotate with Bosa and Ingram also allows them to slide inside on really obvious long yardage situations. Both can do it from inside, but you can't move them inside unless there is someone to rush off the edge. And we won't take the true DT off the field unless it is really long down and distances, or the score it really in our favor.

The inside pass rush was also a problem all year. At the end of the season, Rochelle and Phillon got snaps together and we got more inside push. Not sure if they can sustain it, not enough time to be sure. But Rochelle is not going to have the size and technique to be a great run down player at this point, so we have to find someone else to rotate with them. Maybe that is why they want to keep Mebane and Liuget.

Maybe they think they can sign someone and want the cap space freed up??????

None. There is a list of just about every FA out there below, and a lot of them are stretches.

Anyone who can rush the QB even sorta gets a deal the 1st week of FA. It would have at least 7 figures in it.
I think Phillon, Rochelle and Bosa/Ingram can get a push on long yardage 3rd downs, but that is not going to help on earlier downs.

Yep. "protect" a guy early so other teams pass over him. then sign him cheaper after initial FA signings done and teams have less cap room.
