    Typical Charger move.
We saw it with Junior, Rodney, LT, and now Gates.
    Different city, same Spanos.

So you are saying we should use a roster spot on a guy who is a shell of what he was in his prime? Gates is easily one of my top all time favorite Chargers, but father time caught up to him a couple of years ago and it's time for him to hang them up.

When he wants to retire, that would be the thing to do.

Whose gonna sign a 37 year old te. We should have kept him with us. I hate seeing our legends in another jersey

I actually give the Chargers credit for keeping him longer than expected. Tony G was moved out when he was 32 by the Chiefs. Went on to have 4-5 productive years with Atlanta. Way more productive than Gates over the past few seasons. Retired at 37. Gates played until 37 with the Bolts. And has been declining. I was hoping he would just retire...but shitting on the Chargers for not wasting a roster spot on a player we have treated fairly over his entire career is uncalled for imo. Most fans will just be mad for no reason. He maxed out and did it his entire career with one team. Which is rare.

Harrison was 30. Seau was 33. Gates is almost 38.

    Just stop.

I agree Fleet. He already stayed longer than he should have, he did get to have the last hurrah in the final weeks of the season. It saddens me, but he is a below average TE now. One of the all time great Chargers but time caught up with him. I hope he retires gracefully and does not embarrass himself. Great player and a great man. I wish him well and I know the Chargers do, too. I think this was an obvious decision that the Chargers kept trying to not have to make out of respect for Gates

I'm not at all mad at this decision, and it was done correctly, quietly. He might get a chance to sign on with a team, but only if there is real need for his skills, and he has to prove it. I could see him signing with Dallas, with Witten retiring, but that actually might be a downgrade for them, or the Pats. We'll see after the draft as the rosters get filled.

Come on Rivers flex your frigging muscles and ask them to sign him again... he is the one trick player who could give us the championship this year... or cut the crap and just announce his retirement.

Pretty sure Rivers was consulted and is on board (maybe not happy but understands). Chargers would be stupid not to know how tight those two are

Why? I love Gates and glad he got the record. However, in no way shape or form do I want him taking a roster spot for what he currently brings to the table.

It's awful cold on the business side of things! Just wish it could have been a mutual/happier ending for a sure fire, first ballot Hall of Famer!

I rarely post anymore, but this one hurts...possibly my favorite all-time Charger.

This was a move that had to be made and i applaud them for it. Gates is turning 38 years old and henry is a stud who we cannot afford to be sitting out snaps so the corpse of antonio gates can continue to play
