    Pick Analysis

Fast riser. A big dude that flashes on tape. Every tape you put on, he does some stuff that's pretty special. The problem is it isn't all the time. When you take him, you're betting on him being a more consistent player at the next level. --Mike Mayock

Jones excelled on an ultra-talented Wolfpack defensive line in 2017, piling up 34 stops, 8.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 13 starts with fellow seniors Bradley Chubb, B.J. Hill, and Kentavius Street. He received honorable mention All-ACC recognition as a 13-game starter, making 43 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and three sacks. Jones is a short but active, quick, and strong interior presence with foot quickness that he flashed in 2015 when he started three of 13 games played that year (29 tackles, 6.5 for loss, two sacks.) The four-star recruit earned playing time in 10 games as a true freshman and was credited with 11 tackles that season.

          Draft Projection
          Rounds 4-5

          Overview
Strong player who plays his role along the North Carolina State defensive front, but he doesn't really shine in any single area. He's tough enough at the point of attack to give him a shot as a rotational defensive lineman if he's able to add a little more size, but his shot may come late or undrafted as he lacks the athletic traits and overall production teams will be looking for.

          Strengths
          • Doesn't carry much bad weight on his frame
          • Possesses good overall play strength and upper body power
          • Fairly sturdy in his lower half with a wide base to balance against angle blocks and double teams
          • Shows an ability to pry himself through double teams when he is able to split them early
          • Shows strength and desire to take an early stand and battle back when losing in the early phases of block engagement
          • Hands stay busy with punches, slaps and swipes as a rusher

          Weaknesses
          • Would like to see him do a better job of leveraging his gaps with better hand usage
          • He's strong but not big
          • Looks smaller than his measured size
          • Doesn't really hold the point of attack like a gap control tackle and lacks the get-off of a penetrator
          • Tight-hipped, straight line mover
          • Can be juked along interior
          • Slow to change direction in mirroring cutting running backs
          • Sticks to blocks just a little longer than desired
          • Offers very little pass rush

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

What can Jones do better than Mebane or Luiget? Or is he more of a complementary player for rotational purproses?

He needs to develop his technique. When he fires off low, he can penetrate, make plays and stack against the run. Most of the time he fires off, gets high and doesn't use his hands to shed. He is a good prospect with tools, but not a finished product.

At least he is going to have a year to learn from Mebane.

I like that he can get upfield, very good prospect for us, agreed.

                Justin Jones, DT, NC State

                Draft Prospect Outlook:
Heavy-handed two-gap / one-gap hybrid. Isn't quite quick enough to be a pass-rushing specialist on the inside and isn't quite sturdy or strong enough to flourish in a two-gap role. Will flash good plays in both areas.
                College Recap:
Jones is a prototypical defensive tackle. He's not going to throw a lot of moves at you, but he can overpower offensive linemen on the inside. He can push offensive linemen back with his bull rush. He can get to the quarterback at will. One thing that could also allow him to shine is his strength. He's probably not going to be as highly sought-after and B.J. Hill or Bradley Chubb, but he's going to be a difference maker for a team when he gets to the NFL level. - Michael Clark

                  This one, meh.
hey, he could turn out great. But doesn't get me excited.

Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Jones, DT, N.C. State A- Grade
The Chargers wanted Rasheem Green, but Justin Jones definitely isn't a bad consolation prize. Jones has a quick first step and can beat his opponents with plenty of moves to collapse the pocket. He should be able to help San Angeles apply some much-needed interior pressure on the improving quarterback group in the AFC West. This is a solid pick, as I thought Jones may have gone earlier than this. If he were more consistent, he would've definitely gone in the second round.

Justin Jones Defensive Tackle NC State

Zach GuardJanuary 6, 2018 My Justin Jones draft analysis is that he is a wide body that shoots off the ball and flashes athleticism. That is to say, this NC State defensive tackle is explosive off the ball and has the athleticism to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Of course, Jones has played most of his career next to Bradley Chunn in their 43-scheme, but he has his own set of skills to be disruptive. Not to mention, he plays with a high motor and will work his feet to get a push into the backfield. All in all, Justin Jones is probably a day-three guy that has a shot at landing on a 53 late in camp.
                      Justin Jones Draft Analysis

Position: Defensive TackleSixth Round | Team Fits: New York Jets, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers
                      Strengths:

First off, Justin Jones has a wide body and gets good push off the line. He plays the 1-technique very efficiently and rarely gets pushed out of his gap. In addition, Jones plays with good pad level and will engage offensive linemanquarterback.
                      Weaknesses:

defensive tackles that play with a good motor. To be honest, he gets stuck on a lot of blocks and has a hard time making plays with above average linemanday-two guy.

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
