    Welcome Scott Quessenberry, C UCLA

Scott's brother, David, was a former walk-on at San Jose State who worked himself into sixth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2013. David was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in June 2014, however, and fought until the spring of 2017, when he could finally return to the Texans. Scott is making his own story, though, and it's a happier one. He was more sought-after as a prospect coming out of Carlsbad, Calif., earning top-10 center grades from recruiting services. Quessenberry burned his redshirt halfway through his first year with the Bruins, playing in seven games and starting five at left guard. Pac-12 coaches recognized him as an honorable mention all-conference performer the next year, as he started the first game at center and then the rest of the year at left guard. Scott faced his own adversity in 2015, redshirting due to having surgeries on both shoulders. He showed no ill effects from the procedures in 2016, however, and returned to play at a first-team all-conference pace per league coaches. Quessenberry started all 13 games at center in 2017, again garnering honorable mention All-Pac-12 notice.

    Overview
Burly, barrel-chested center who plays with good balance, body control and consistency. Quessenberry is average with his movements and isn't all that powerful as a drive blocker, but he does generate some pop at the point of attack and he's solid all the way around. He may offer guard flexibility as well which could mean an early stint as a backup with a role as eventual starter at center.

    Strengths
    • Starter for better part of four years
    • Good thickness with compact frame from knees to neck
    • Good burst into block fits in run game
    • Cocks and uncoils hips launching into opponent with good force
    • Showed ability to attack and dislodge Stanford's Harrison Phillips on occasion with leveraged blows when they went head-to-head
    • Balanced pass sets with adequate slide and mirror
    • Hands are like vice grips that can latch in
    • Active re-setting hands like a sumo wrestler in attempt to regain opponent's frame when he's being bull-rushed
    • Identifies and spies potential blitzers early on and will peel off and find work if they don't come

    Weaknesses
    • Lower body push is below average as drive blocker
    • Initial strike carries force, but drive is missing behind it
    • Long-armed defenders give him trouble
    • Hand placement needs to be more consistent in run game
    • Can be slow to pass off initial twister and allowing a pathway to his quarterback to open
    • Lacks length and reactive athleticism for optimal recovery
    • Very average in space
    • Used on short pulls but doesn't get into his target with plus force
    • Climbs to linebackers can be hit or miss
    • Had surgery on both shoulders forcing him to miss 2015

    Update
12/11/17 - 2017 ALL-PAC-12 FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Quessenberry was honored with post-season accolades for the second consecutive season, starting all 13 games at center for the Bruins. He started 43 games overall for UCLA over his career, logging starts at both guard positions as well as center during that time. His older brother, David, was drafted by the Houston Texans out of San Jose State in 2013.
    Overview
Skill position stars like Josh Rosen (as well as Brett Hundley and Paul Perkins before him) earned most of the attention at UCLA but the Bruins quietly churned out NFL caliber offensive linemen in four of the past five drafts, including former Morris Trophy award winner and No. 33 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Xavier Sua-Filo (Houston Texans). Assuming his surgically-repaired shoulders hold up to the medical evaluations at the Combine, Quessenberry - a 43 game starter and two-time All-Pac-12 honoree - will soon make it five UCLA offensive linemen drafted since 2013.

Quessenberry signed with UCLA as "just" a three star recruit but quickly proved recruiting experts wrong, emerging as a starter midway through his freshman season at left guard. He started at center in the season 2014 season opener due to an injury to teammates before sliding back to guard for the rest of his redshirt sophomore campaign, fighting through pain in his shoulders which would ultimately require offseason surgery, forcing him to redshirt in 2015.

When Quessenberry returned to the field in 2016, he was noticeably bigger and stronger. He started camp at right guard but ultimately was moved inside to center to help protect Rosen, earning him the first of back to back all-conference honors while starting all 25 games at the pivot.

    Analysis
    STRENGTHS
Possesses a prototypical build for a center with a naturally low center of gravity due to short legs and a big bubble with a thick, well distributed musculature. Effective anchor due to his frame, core flexibility and quality knee bend, surrendering some ground but holding up well against even powerful nose guards (Washington-2017). Good snap to step quickness, firing accurate shotgun snaps and delivering a solid initial punch to defenders. Plays on the balls of his feet, showing good overall athleticism, including quickness and balance to slide laterally to mirror in pass protection. Shows agility as a trap blocker and when asked to block on the move, quickly climbing to the second level and when adjusting to secondary targets. Experience shows with his recognition of blitzes and ability to land a pop on multiple defenders on the same play, passing off defenders with teammates and adjusting on the fly. Offers position flexibility with 18 career starts at guard. Largely durable performer with 44 career starts, including the final 25 consecutively at center after missing the 2015 season. Two-time team captain. Nominated for the Senior CLASS Award, a national honor given to the player who stars in the community and classroom with character and competition. -- Rob Rang 1/14/2018

    WEAKNESSES
There is some passivity to Quessenberry's play. He absorbs while anchoring bull rushers and is more of a wall-off than dominating run blocker, relying on his quickness, leverage and hand placement to get the job done. Lacks elite height for the position and makes himself shorter by occasionally ducking his head on contact, leaving him vulnerable to swim moves. Lacks a dominant punch, failing to knock defenders down, even when assisting on double-teams. Missed the entire 2015 season following surgeries on both shoulders and wore a visible brace early in 2016. - Rob Rang 1/14/2018

COMPARES TO: Brian Schwenke, Titans - The 6-3, 315 pound Schwenke was a standout in the Pac-12 (Cal), as well, before the Titans nabbed him in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. His quickness and tenacity have earned him starts at center and guard since then, a reflection of his positional versatility and smarts.

IN OUR VIEW: Do not let the fact that Quessenberry dropped from First Team All-Pac-12 honors as a junior to Honorable Mention accolades as a senior convince you that he played poorly in 2017. Quessenberry may not be a physically dominating player but his build, agility and technique are each NFL-caliber, warranting a Day Three selection and the expectation that he will compete for playing time early in his pro career.
    2017 Season

    2014 Season
Starter in all 13 games ... Honorable mention all-conference selection by the coaches ... Opened at center in the first game of the year at Virginia while Jake Brendel was out ... Moved to guard for the balance of the season ... Helped to pave the way for the Pac-12's leading rusher, Paul Perkins, who ground his way to the second-best rushing total in school history ... Named honorable mention Academic All-Conference.
    2013 Season
Saw his first game action as a starter at Oregon in game seven ... Went on to start five of the next six contests at left guard including the bowl game win over Virginia Tech ... Presented the Ed Kezirian Award for Academic and Athletic Balance at the team's annual awards banquet.

Definitely needed some depth added to the interior OL group. Just put some more sand in his pants and he could take over from Pouncey in a couple years.

Battler on the inside. Decent anchor. Adequate mobility. Good interior OL depth.

Charger fan to boot. I want to hear what Hardwick has to say about him. Experience at LG and C. We needed a development guy that was flexible but can jump in as needed. He sure looks like a happy guy.

Shortly after the Chargers took him in the fifth round, guard Scott Quessenberry called Chargers.com to give his exclusive first interview as a member of the Bolts.

Quessenberry: Chargers.com: And you had season tickets growing up?

Quessenberry: Yep, plaza section. Crazy how it all comes full circle.

                      Quessenberry: . Chargers.com: Philip Rivers?

Quessenberry: I grew up watching Phil. I grew up watching him back up Drew (Brees). When he finally got his time, I watched him go 14-2 and have MVP-caliber seasons. So to block for a signal caller like that, is going to be really special.
