    Chris Simms: 12

The Los Angeles Chargers were a playoff-caliber team last season. If they hadn't gotten off to such a rough start, they would have been one of the few teams capable of threatening the New England Patriots in the AFC playoffs.

The Chargers should be better in 2018. They should be healthier on the offseason line, and they added Mike Pouncey at center. They also got one of the steals of the draft when safety Derwin James fell to them at No. 17.

James is going to be the Kam Chancellor for Gus Bradley's defense in Los Angeles. The Chargers also added Uchenna Nwosu, a linebacker who fits right into the defense, along with a big defensive tackle in Justin Jones.

The Chargers will have a better line, a better run defense and will be in the playoff hunt this season.

The Chargers had major center and kicker woes entering the offseason. Caleb Sturgis could finally cure the latter problem, while Mike Pouncey will be the new center. Pouncey is the bigger name, but I'm not sure he's the solution, given that he needs a new hip and all. It's a good thing that general manager Tom Telesco added UCLA's Scott Quessenberry in the middle of the draft as insurance for Pouncey.
The rest of Telesco's draft was stellar. Derwin James is going to be a big upgrade in the secondary, and Justin Jones will provide a much-needed push up front.

The Chargers hit a home run -- er, scored a goal on a corner kick -- with the Derwin James selection in the first round. Who knows why that guy fell all the way to the 17th slot? Edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu (Round 2, No. 48) felt like a need pick as opposed to the BPA. But the Bolts were looking to tighten up their defense up the middle, which is precisely why they took DT Justin Jones in the third (No. 84). The drop here is indicative of Carolina's surge. The Chargers might be hosting a playoff game on the soccer pitch this season.

They were close to being a playoff team a year ago, and I think it happens for them this year. I think they are the AFC West's best team.

Combo of pass rushers, corners and first rounder Derwin James may comprise league's top nickel D. Bolts might finally be Lombardi-caliber.

    12. Los Angeles Chargers

    2017 record: 9-7
    Post-free-agency ranking: 15

The Chargers allowed the third-fewest points last season, but that didn't stop them from reloading the defense. They used their first four picks on defenders for the second time in the common draft era, landing Scouts Inc.'s seventh-ranked prospect, safety Derwin James, at No. 17.
