OT: Sports betting national ban overturned

Pretty big deal, I think. It will be up to the individual states to decide.

New Jersey won a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court that could lead many states to legalize betting on college and professional sports. The justices ruled 6-3 that a 25-year-old federal law that has effectively prohibited sports betting outside Nevada is unconstitutional.

Not sure how I feel about this. I live in Oregon and here we used to have whats called sports action and it was lottery that allowed you to bet on NFL Football games and it was pretty popular here until the state decided they wanted to be able to host the ncaa basketball tournament in Portland. Well in order for them to do that they had to give up sports action. Which kinda irratated me because In played every week. You can't cheat because it's through the State and the money was going to the schools. Anyways Oregon is a very liberal state so I can't see them passing a bill allowing people to bet on football games.

there are some red states going for it like Iowa, Kentucky, South Carolina. The big red states so far have laws that prohibit this kind of gambling:Texass, Florida, Georgia Alabama Tennessee. North Carolina

The advantage that Vegas has is that the sharps spread their bets across many books so they don't drastically move the line. No one flies to Vegas just to make a $500 bet on a single game. If anything, Vegas can get their hands into setting lines for the states, they know what they are doing, and your local indian casino doesn't.

I think the biggest hit might be against the offshore books, if there are legal US multi-state on-line books. The "concern" with the sports leagues is with making sure that the games are on the up and up. I think that's not a big deal with the pros, but the colleges really have to be concerned as the temptation for college amateurs will be great.

Make it so that if any college player who throws a game on purpose because they took money to throw the game or took money from a bookie for any reason that they will be banned from professional sports for life.
