Plenty of quarterbacks are great from the neck down. it's that darn neck up part. See He Who Shall Not be Named.. Nuke LaLoosh in real life.. million dollar arm, ten cent head.

Kinda depends on what one means by QB...

We've had Rivers for so long now, doubt we will have his equal any time soon. A decent QB not named Rivers? Not on the roster.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing what Nic Shimonek can do.

Our QB of the future is in high school right now.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

The kid from Texas Tech is also interesting.

I'm not at all sure that Lynn loves Geno. I think Geno was a cheap option with starting experience, and there is no risk in signing him. I will be extremely disappointed if Cardale does not convincingly beat out Geno and lay claim to "QB post Rivers."

I personally think Geno has the inside edge, he was a better prospect coming out of college and he has starting experience. And I still see Cardale as a scatter arm. But we'll see, I'm hoping these two get most of the snaps in exhibition games and one guy really steps up.

Geno is a better quarterback than you think. He badly beat out the Giants' backups, including Davis Webb, and outplayed Eli in the 1 game he started (go watch the game yourself). Geno also beat Fitzpatrick originally, and summarily beat Hackenberg, Petty, etc.

All that said, I do agree that Cardale has to beat Geno out or else he has no future as a top 10 QB, but there's a reason the Giants' coach was so giddy to get Geno out there. Cardale barely played in college. He needs 5 years of development.

We'll find out how good Geno and Cardale are in preseason.

seemed like his development and rising star status ended when he got punched in the face by a teammate over a $100.00 loan he wouldn't pay back. Didn't Sanchez replace him at that point and keep him from regaining a chance to start?

Sucker punched. Broken jaw required surgery out 6-10 wks. Fitzpatrick replaced him (not sr. Butt fumble) and had one of his very few good years, partly due to the major upgrade in offensive talent brought in (marshall, decker etc). Whwn Gino came off IR they were in playoff contention and stayed with hot hand. Fitz then wanted a big money extension and they rightfully passed on that.

            Best Case Scenario

            1. Rivers plays is healthy the entire season and takes us to the playoffs.
            2. Cardelle Jones make the leap this season and we our back up
            2. Nic Shimonek suprises out and outplays Geno Smith & Jones

            Worst Case Scenario
            1. Rivers gets injured for extended period of time
2.Geno Smith is a vet with the most experience and he would get the nod over Jones unless Jones has made a big leap from last year

I must disagree with that. Cardale has issues with reading coverages and making decisions, but he has a beautiful textbook perfect throwing motion - no wind up, no turning the ball 180 degrees behind the back, over the top, super quick from decision to throw to ball getting released.

"Scatter armed" means you throw overhead, sidearm, wind-up and no wind up.... no one consistent motion.

I mean the ball doesn’t necessarily go where he wants it to.

Call me crazy, but I think the Chargers backup QB situation is better this year than it has been since Volek.

Smith is a guy that has enough experience and skills to manage a few games if needed. And that is what a backup is truly for -- not to win a superbowl (although in a few cases this has happened in the past). Jones is a great developmental prospect that is really no risk. And the Chargers got both of these options for basically nothing.

No doubt in my mind neither of these guys are the QB of the future. They will draft another. This team is getting stacked and would suck to have a QB like Geno and Cardale to bring them down. Of course we have a few more seasons to get that QB. Surely it cant be one of those guy

I agree. There is no reason why we need a QB of the future on this roster right now. We do need a guy to be able to run the offence and not run the ball over IF the unthinkable happens. Rivers had one of his very best seasons last year and has not shown regression in his skills as of yet. Why create drama and disraction in the locker room?
