    MGIII in 2020

MGIII is an unrestricted free agent after the 2019 season. He is talking about the rich deal that Gurley recently signed at ~$15M per yr. I like Melvin, but can't see paying a RB that much dough. We'll need another bellcow back in the next few years, unless Justin Jackson can be that guy. The thing is that Rivers will be winding down his career too by around that time, and do we want both a new QB and a new RB at the same time? Or, do we keep Gordon on a rich contract while a young QB is groomed? I can't see paying Gordon $12M to $14M per.

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

That bridge is closer than it appears.

LOL true enough. They really have to get through this season though. If he has another injury, or a bunch of nagging injuries or whatever.

If he earns it, he'll get paid.

The harsh reality is that players at the RB position are "disposable" in today's league and while I think Gordon is a good back, as F21 points out, that micro-fracture surgery does not bode well for a long career. I'm curious to see how Jackson and Ekeler look. I have a sneaky feeling that Jackson could surprise a lot of people. We have the luxury of watching this and next season before making a decision.

didn't he play all year last year without problems from that procedure? When successful, that procedure grows a new layer of hard cartilage covering the bone in the joint and leaves it stronger than before the procedure.

                He did.

Another point worth considering is he's 25 years old. We all know the history of RB's once they get over 30. It's not a hard and fast rule, but I'd hesitate to put a huge contract in front of him for multiple year at age 27. It may be worth reworking his deal at the end of this season though, assuming he can continue to grow as a player.

You're a Charger one year at a time.

Hmmm, I wonder what the average age of the RB was on the last say 10 SB winning teams. Getting younger, older, same roughly?

Decent RB's can be had anywhere in the draft or FA market. Not a position to be spending big dollars on.

If he establishes he is a big part of the offense that we cant do without and we make waves due to him then id say pay him well. At this point id say he isnt there yet but he IS a good back that is still ascending if healthy. Our offense does need a versatile back to give it options and he is a good fit. He isnt LT that deserved top dollar but we also have an overall better passing attack than running and are not as reliant on a rb at this point. To me its a wait and see.
