I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong. I now believe I was incorrect for putting the Chargers on the overrated list even though they - groan - barely beat the 49ers and Bengals at home Ugh.

The Chargers are now second in DVOA. Their defense, despite the injuries, did a great job on the Chiefs. Philip Rivers is playing great, and Mike Williams is coming into his own. Even the kicker isn't screwing up! If Keenan Allen and Melvin Gordon are healthy for the playoffs, this team will be very difficult to stop.

    Elliot Harrison, NFL.com 2 (LW 5)

The Chargers are the Michael Myers of the NFL right now (which is better, I think, than being the Michael Bolton, getting no respect). That is to say, they are a scary group. The Anthony Lynn-guided outfit beat the Chiefs on Thursday night -- in Arrowhead, mind you -- while still being far from full strength. Not only were they without RB1 Melvin Gordon, they were without RB2 Austin Ekeler, too. In fact, the Bolts have been down a man (or two) all year. Right when their game wrecker on defense returned to form, their fantasy-points Pez Dispenser got hurt. When Joey Bosa, Gordon and Ekeler are all in action at the same time again, whether that happens in Week 16 or 17, look out. Then there's second-year receiver Mike Williams, who enjoyed his finest game all season, with two touchdowns and the outcome-deciding two-point conversion. And, of course, the Chargers wouldn't have gotten where they did without Hunter Henry. (PSA for the uninitiated: The tight end returned to practice Monday after missing all of this season thus far with an ACL tear.)

They have a chance to be the top seed in the AFC. That road victory over the Chiefs last week was impressive.

      Just a tremendous, tremendous win.

Quality of this team evidenced by its depth, which has enabled Bolts to weather key injuries. Could be AFC's No. 1 seed a week from now.

        ESPN 2 (LW 4)

Biggest breakthrough: WR Mike Williams. After a disappointing rookie season limited by injuries, the Clemson product is having a bounce-back year, leading the Chargers in receiving touchdowns with nine. Williams has totaled 37 receptions for 592 yards and helped lift the Bolts over the Kansas City Chiefs last week with a three-touchdown performance. -- Eric D. Williams

The Chargers drafted Mike Williams for games like this. Williams was responsible for three of the Chargers' four total touchdowns and a big-time two-point conversion. The Chargers needed this win. This was a statement made against arguably the best team in the AFC. The Chargers now have some serious legitimacy in the AFC playoff conversation, and the hype train is now allowed to leave Union Station. To the playoffs!

Bleacher Report Consensus 2 (LW 6)

Maybe it was the 1-2 start to the season. Or the fact the Chargers have spent 2018 toiling in the shadow of the Rams in L.A. in a soccer stadium that holds 17 people. But whatever the reason, the Bolts have spent most of this year as the NFL's best team that no one was talking about.

After rallying from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to stun the Chiefs at Arrowhead with a successful two-point conversion that won the game and pulled the Chargers into a tie with Kansas City atop the AFC West, plenty of people are talking about the Chargers now.

As a matter of fact, after the win, Davenport called the Chargers the most dangerous team in the AFC. He backed that up in these rankings, slotting Los Angeles higher than any other team in the conference.

"Los Angeles has balance on offense and defense that the AFC's other top contenders just can't match," he said. "The Chargers may not be able to beat out the Chiefs for the division title, but playing on the road is no big deal for a team that doesn't really have a home right now anyway.

        Gagnon is a believer, too:

"It's not just that the Chargers finally got over their allergy to the Chiefs with a clutch road win on short rest, but it's also that nobody else in the AFC is looking good. The Patriots have lost three of their last five, the Texans had to fight to beat the Jets, the Chiefs are down a lot of key players and nobody in the AFC North looks like a prime contender. Could this actually finally be the Bolts' year in that wide-open conference?"

We arent perfect but we appear to still be firing on all cylinders with an extra bottle of NOx to spare right now. I think KC is still the toughest competitor besides us in the AFC. Indy might be right there with the Texans and Indy might not even make the tournament.

Some have Pittsburgh still up there after beating NE at home but thats after 3 straight losses...i think they have too many weaknesses. NE I think is beatable like we havent seen before. At home they are tougher but on the road they arent good...period...that tells me they just arent consistently good...if a 3 seed they will be on the road.

a big weekend with Ravens and Seattle games deciding our division imo. Must win Sat eve then sit back and send well wishes to Seattle by the bucket load.

As a Chargers fan, I must say I have enjoyed this past week more than any other in years ... while I know we are not quite as good as everyone in the media is saying and we have had a lot of luck this season ... and we are being over-hyped right now ...

            BUT I LIKE IT A LOT !!!!

His takes have been pretty weak overall. He's more of a tout running a website, vs. a football writer though, so he might be swayed by bettor sentiment. He certainly lags the others, but the guy from SB Nation was just added, and I wouldn't trust a #1 ranking either. At least Walter C. has gotten off his "overrated" rant, but he does correctly point out the weakness of the D in the middle. Bottom line, the Chargers aren't sneaking up on anyone anymore.

I put more credence on those rankings that are from a group consensus, like ESPN, or SI.com, even though the blurb is written by a single author. The AP ranking is solid as well, even though there is no blurb.. The statistical ratings show a trend of improvement for the team, and I really like the DVOA from Football Outsiders, even if it seems too high.

I think you are like many here....afraid of success and nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
But seriously....we have a kicker now and take care of the ball for the most part. I dont think there is a more talented team right now. Hsd we had thisbguy kicking and rivers didnt have a brain fart vs denver our record in the last 30 ganes would be all-time good. We didn't, but the reality is the Bolts do not need to take a back seat to anyone. And the team BELIEVES they can win any game.
