  • Welcome Back Nick Rose

Signed to handle the Kickoffs. I hope he doesn't shank something out of bounds at a critical time.

Not going to let cordarelle Return any KOs. Not a bad strategy. Give em the ball on the 25 and make them drive the field.

Good move. This to let MoneyB concentrate fully on his accurate kicking, make the short kicks automatic, doesn't have to worry about kickoff.

Nick Rose was the 2nd strongest kicker we have had out of the former kickers in recent years. He should kickoff well.

Guayo had the strongest legs. His mental state must be really suck to be unemployed all season, despite the early struggle of the Chargers and many other teams in the kicking game. Now we need a kickoff specialist and still pass over him.

Did not see this coming, but it's not surprising. Kind of hate to use a roster spot on another kicker but if it stops a big return it's worth it.

Chargers turning to Nick Rose for kickoff duties

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Chargers are signing Nick Rose to handle kickoff duties in Sunday's playoff game against the New England Patriots, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The move could help a kicking game that allowed the most returns in the NFL during the regular season.

Chargers rookie kicker Michael Badgley has been productive on field goals and extra points.

In 10 games played during the regular season, Badgley made 15 of 16 fields goals (94 percent), including a franchise-long 59 yarder in a Week 14 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. Badgley also made 27 of 28 extra points (96.4 percent).

However, Badgley had a touchback on only 9 of his 54 kickoffs during the 2018 regular season. That 16.7 percent rate was the worst in the NFL among players with at least 10 kickoffs in 2018.

The Chargers are concerned with explosive Patriots return man Cordarrelle Patterson, who averaged 28.8 yards per return during the regular season, including one taken back for a 95-yard touchdown.

"They have one of the best kick returners that I've seen in a long time," Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said this week. "So that's going to be a heck of a challenge for our special teams. It's a good thing we have one of the better cover units in the league right now, but that's going to be a heck of a challenge."

The Chargers did hold returners to 21.7 yards per kickoff return in the regular season, the eighth-best rate in the league.

Rose kicked in two games for the Chargers at the end of the 2017 season, making 1 of 3 field goals and 5 of 6 extra points. Rose had touchbacks on 8 of his 9 kickoffs for the Bolts last season.

He also played in eight games for the Redskins as an injury replacement for Dustin Hopkins.

Another thing is that Badger is a hardnose guy on tackling the returner, so if he get injured then we have a backup. Hate to be like SEA last week, or us with Keading and Novak sometimes, lost kicker during the game without a backup and have to go 4th down and 2 pts everytime. Crucial in the playoff when you're on surival mode.

Small moves like this can sometimes be huge.

Just please don't kick it out of bounds at an inopportune time.

waste of a roster spot and misplaced concern regarding Badgely's TB rate, considering this quote from article above:

"The Chargers did hold returners to 21.7 yards per kickoff return in the regular season, the eighth-best rate in the league."

Would rather they carried extra DL, OL or even LBs instead...

We dont need another KO specialist... I mean just cover enough to stop them at the 25th yard... what we really need is a Punter...

                      "no transaction today" per TT.

I guess they want to hold the waiver/IR until the last possible second.

Should we really take that chance with patterson returning kicks? Even if its just for a week, its worth it. At least Donnie Jones doesn't overkick his coverage. Punt and Kickoff returns for TD's can easily be the death of us in the playoffs. I trust our defense more than our ST's.

Put the ball out of the back of the end zone.

Its also very cold there, the ball will not travel as far. So a bigger leg is in order for kickoffs and any end of game long field goals.
Moving to LA is not a good business decision, it’s a death sentence.

Seven or eight touchbacks on Sunday would be great.

Exactly. Yes our coverage has been very good. BUT Corderelle is one of the most dangerous Return guys. Even shorter kickoffs due to the cold means more opportunities to break one or flip filed position.

I have always been against a roster spot in season for 2 kickers. I like this situational addition a LOT provided we get a touchback every KO.

Right or wrong, at least A.L. is being proactive. It's not something you've seen in a Charger organization (ever?).
