I like the Tyrod Taylor signing. He's the first backup the team has had in I can't remember how many years that has the ability to win a game if Rivers was out. Hoping that he doesn't see the field, but if he does, I'm not embarrassed. The past several backups have been horrible.

Would I be happy if Taylor were signed to be our starting quarterback? No. As a backup? Absolutely!

They got the wrong Bills Qb. They should have signed Peterman. The Chargers caught all his passes.

Tyrod Taylor is an excellent pick up for us. God forbid anything happens to Philip Rivers, but if it did, Taylor is more than good enough to step in and win games. His record in Buffalo was 7-6, 7-8, and 8-6. Despite his lacklustre stats in Cleveland, his record read 1-1-1. The guy is a play maker. He does rely on his athleticism and he wasn't exactly the most adventurous of quarterbacks since he did play it safe a lot of the time, but he did show how big his arm is when he did throw it deep. So if we did need to call on him, he can win us games. I would not have been as confident about Geno Smith or Cardale Jones in the line up.

One other thing with this addition is that it potentially gives us a bridge quarterback if, God forbid, Philip Rivers decides to retire after this season. We all need to remember that Rivers has one year left on his deal and will be 38 towards the end of the regular season. So although we all want him to get an extension and play until he is at least 40, there is a good chance that he could call it a day after this season for any number of reasons. And to be honest, if we did end up winning the Super Bowl, I could see Rivers doing a Peyton Manning and riding off into the sunset as a Super Bowl champion rather than coming back and defending it. Though he would miss playing in the new stadium which might be a reason to comeback. It's a tough one to think about. But Taylor does give us some insurance if Rivers did retire after this season, and even Rivers plays another year after that, Taylor is still young enough to hang around and be that bridge quarterback for the next era.

Wow, wonder where that $6 mil ranks with starting QBs?

I imagine they had to make that a fairly sweet up front deal as I heard that Miami was talking and offering too.........

                      Hate this signing. Here's why:
                      • A waste of $5.5m per year. Rivers never gets hurt and if he does forget winning any playoff games anyway.
                      • This is only useful if in the unlikely case that (1) Rivers misses a few games with injury, (2) Taylor helps to win more games than they would otherwise with a different, cheaper, backup QB, whereas (3) the Chargers therefore make the playoffs due to those extra wins, and 4) the Chargers do something in the playoffs worthwhile like making the Super Bowl. The odds of all those things happening is very unlikely.
                      • This may cost us the Chargers a 3rd round comp pick next year that they would have gotten for Ty Williams based on the plus and minus free agent formula. Depending on what else shakes out. So if you like this signing, do you still like it as a trade for a 3rd or 4th round pick?

Tyrod has limitations as a QB (lacks the ability to throw with any anticipation). But he's still a big upgrade over Geno and Cardale.

Don't look at base salary. It's all about the guarantees.
