I don't dislike the kid and willing to defer to the Chargers scouts on his placement but shouldn't we go after someone with the possibility of impacting the team this year?
He could be a perennial pro bowler for us years down the road but the jump from d2 to the nfl is going to take a few years, at least a year, to handle.
Not it sure I love the pick but it is what it is, here's hoping he eats his Wheaties and picks up on technique quickly so he can push Tevi mid season.

Well the University of Sioux Falls is a name that crops up whenever serious college football fans come together so this should be a great pick.
Seriously I love the guys size and abilities but he is definitely raw. Maybe he will replace Okung in a few years. Would love to see someone replace Tevi in a few months.

At least he'll have a chance to practice against top level edge players. Quite a difference from Div II competition to pro-bowlers. It does sound that he had pretty good coaching and didn't have to change much in his practices at the East-West Shrine game.

Pre-Draft Analysis
Pipkins is an athletic offensive tackle with below-average length. He dominated Division II competition and played well at the East-West Shrine game, but there are still concerns about his ability to make the jump to the NFL. He's wide with his hands and needs to do a better job of keeping his hips under him.
Post-Draft Analysis
We expected the Chargers to bring in competition for Sam Levi at right tackle spot so this pick makes sense from a need standpoint. However, he was outside our top 300, so this a substantial reach. -- Steve Muench

Here's this from the East-West Shrine game:
"There were two offensive tackles on the West team that blocked well and really helped themselves. One of them was Sioux Falls' Trey Pipkins. The 6-foot-7, 307-pounder has good length and a nice build to him. He showed nice feet in the position drills while also using his size, length and strength to tie up edge rushers in the pass rushing one-on-ones. After practice, Pipkins was swarmed by team scouts, as they sought to interview him and get more information on his history. This was an excellent start to the week for Pipkins, and he could have mid-round potential in a weak offensive tackle draft class."
