He is not a coverage guy. His coverage is OK, but his best stuff is setting the edge and containing the outside run. But has some instincts and is OK as a off the line LB who can do some shed and flow.

If you look around at his games, he tackled better early in the year, and the whole Houston D got worse and worse as the season went on. They just may not give it much work in practice.

He should be a good replacement for Emmanuel. His best work is being physical setting the edge and playing contain. He blows up or turns back most of the wide runs at him. He needs work on his shed technique, but there are times his hands are like a boxer, and he just smashes the blockers back (big positive) with a heavy punch to the chest. Great speed to power move as a pass rusher. Good but not great instincts, although some of it may be that he seems very disciplined and just not willing to give up his primary assignment even when the play goes elsewhere. Is misplaced in the Houston D, where they ask him to play in space and make plays with speed when his obvious best skills are taking on blocks and being physical. He is a good, not great athlete and he is exposed some in space.

He should be a good replacement for Emmanuel. SHould be able to play both ILB spots as well as OTTO, which is his more natural position. Not a fluid guy in space, but good enough. At his best being physical and using his hand punch to defeat blocks and throw blockers around. Has only one move as a pass rusher, but it is a really good speed to power that knocks blockers back into the QB.

Two LBs last year, two this year plus a top FA. Glad TT is addressing this.

He has similar upside to Larry English, but is a much better value based on draft position.

            ANALYST'S REPORTS

            Crabbs

            Marino

Football Intelligence -He's still getting consistency down, considering he's asked to do so much. That said, thought he did well to execute primary role before transitioning and locating the football, which is where he needs to develop better anticipation and feel for play development.

Tackling -Strong grip, made several tackles by his finger tips but never let go of the play. Like where he wins as an attack player, he's aggressive with his angles to close down and does a nice job exploding into contact. He's a little flaky when he's closing in lateral pursuit to finish.

Block Shedding -Some really impressive power in these hands when he uses them properly. Have seen him toss and rag-doll tight ends like they're nothing. Has put ball carriers on their back by throwing blockers into their body. He's got a clean little sweep/rip to discard at first punch.

Competitive Toughness -Motor is excellent, he's quick to rebound off of overshooting landmarks and made a ton of hustle/splash plays around the ball. His functional strength is okay, but not great...that's an area where he needs to develop to play at same level as he did at college.

Lateral Mobility -He's got a nice flash across the face of blockers when he puts the gas pedal down. He's pretty smooth working laterally and his ability to scrape and flow into the boundary off the play side is effective. He'll lose leverage by getting nosy, not due to physical restrictions.

Coverage Skills -He's really nice in space. Houston flexed him out over the slot quite a bit and tasked him with playing zone, showed loose hips and nice COD to carry routes and react to the ball. He's got needed ball skills to react late with hand-eye coordination.

Gap Shooting Ability -When he was asked to attack it was typically off the edge as a stand-up OLB, but he shows good up-field burst and quickness to really attack real estate into the backfield. He has physical tools but not necessarily quick trigger to win on second level in this capacity.

Feet/Change of Direction -He's pretty clean here, he's got nice COD skills and is a natural thanks to dynamic hips. He's not the most explosive in lateral drives, particularly when he's got to work across his momentum, but he's got enough mobility to win out in space.

Flexibility -Body control is pretty clean and there's a nice effort to reduce surface area when he's pressing up the field as a pass rusher. He's got clean hip hinge and can open himself 180 degrees to flip and carry a route as it works through his space.

First Step Quickness -Wins here consistently, like what he brings to the table as a hybrid player and/or as a 4-3 SAM to play on the LOS and then be implemented to attack as a rusher. Can win with speed and first step from time to time off the edge.

            PROSPECT COMPARISON - Tyus Bowser

            BEST TRAIT - Football IQ

            WORST TRAIT - Functional Strength

            BEST FILM - Memphis (2018)

            WORST FILM - Temple (2018)

            RED FLAGS - None

Emeke Egbule is a really interesting player. He's a late bloomer who really came into his own last season for the Cougars and his versatility offers him a unique chance to be a defensive chess piece down the road. Egbule's best projection is likely a 4-3 SAM, where he can play on the line of scrimmage, play pass coverage in both man and zone and be able to help set the edge against the run. He's not fully refined, but an athletic talent.

I initially thought Leo, but OTTO makes more sense now.
I would still like to see him get chances at 9t

He'll play a bit of Leo too. But with Nwosu and Ingram, and given our needs at the other LB spots he will get his first shot at olb.

#2 OTTO, #3 Leo maybe. They'll have to see how he works.
