OT: USA Women's and Men's Soccer Team

First and foremost, I'm glad that I will continue to have a board with knowledgable fans to lurke from and occasionally post on. I didn't post much but it was a regular thing for me to check thenflforum everyday since '06. Never liked CMB and never will. RIP thenflforum!

So on to the topic of discussion! Has anyone here been watching the World Cup qualifying matches? The MNT have been playing quite well. We are first in our group (3-1-1) and 5 pts ahead of Mexico (our arch nemesis).

It's exciting to see the men's team do well for a change. There's a fanbase called the American Outlaws who have created several chants for games and you can tell they really made an impact on the game against Panama in Seattle. 40,000+ fans attended that game and you can really hear the whole stadium doing the chants...sent chills over my whole body! We always beat Panama 2-0, and in convincing fashion as well.

There will be a friendly match against Guatamala at the Q on July 5th and hopefully the San Diego chapter of the American Outlaws are just as good as Seattle. I'll be attending, seeing how tickets are not too expensive. Can't wait for the World Cup come 2014!
    This guy.......has a man-crush for Ken Whisenhunt.

Yeah, I'm super excited for next year's World Cup. I wish I could pay closer attention to the qualifiers. I'm in Thailand for the next two-ish years, so it's more difficult. However, I'm really looking forward to watching the Cup internationally in a country (like most of the rest of the world) who's most popular sport is soccer. I'm hoping to watch the finals in Bangkok, and it should be nuts!

The game here (SLC) tonight has a lot of hype locally. It's a big deal for the community and RSL to get the MNT and a World Cup qualifier in Utah. They said there are people from 45 different states in town for the game tonight and there was a huge party downtown last night for the locals and visitors. Kind of cool...

Good win today from our boys. Still top of the group!
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?

Soccer is all I follow besides the Chargers... seen every game. Too bad my motherland (Mexico) is choking but hey... the USMNT is looking good!

Happened to catch the game last night. Was a nice win, and they appear to be virtually assured a birth in the world cup now.

The one thing the USA has always lacked is tempo and quick passes. This team is starting to look a little more Euro every time they play. Decent size....speed and game-play tempo is good to see. I think US soccer in general is getting more popular with really good athletes. So going forward we should get better. The youth system is pretty good now.

American soccer may be benefiting from parents being scared all the CTE reports from NFL veterans. However, the USA winning a world cup on the men's side is less likely than the Chargers winning a super bowl. I hope both happen in my lifetime.

I just want the National team to be competitive. Make it to the top 4 would be nice.

I can't say what will happen in the next 20 years, but all I really hope for with the USMNT is a good showing, and if we're REALLY lucky, or just catch lightning in a bottle- maybe we'll make a final in my lifetime.

That said, I like what this squad is becoming. Jurgen really had to live through some growing pains, but the work really seems to be starting to pay off.

I like what Zusi and Bradley bring. Dempsey and Altidore have seemed to develop a really nice chemistry up front. We look a lot more creative on offense than we ever did under (old coach) Bradley. Last night we were just a foot off on a lot of passes, but we are looking at the game differently than I've ever seen us before. That is fun to watch.

That being said, do we just not develop anybody that can play defense? If Honduras had ANY skill players up front, they had a lot of good chances that they just squandered by not being that good. I'm sure somebody will say we were playing more aggressive up front, but if we were playing.. say.. Mexico. Or pretty much ANY European side... thats at least a tie game if not a loss.

Bottom line- I'm happy we got the win, and Klinnsman really seems to have us on a fun and exciting track. But, I really hope we get the defense figured out.
