A good read: Mel Kiper Jr. and Joel Buchsbaum

This is a nice informative article about Kiper and Buchsbaum.....I got to hear Joel interviewed by Hacksaw a couple of times....interesting character

What is now a national obsession and one of the biggest days on the sports calendar was once mocked as a trivial obsession for two devoted — and very different — NFL draft analysts of yore. You can’t tell the story of the draft’s incredible rise from afterthought to prominence without giving the original NFL draftniks their proper due: Mel Kiper Jr. and Joel Buchsbaum. Each deserve their due for helping the NFL draft become the theater it has.

I have always liked Kiper, & certainly always liked Buchsbaum (RIP) as well.

Two Tuesdays before the draft, the PFW draft edition came out. And I went to the Perris newsstand in North Park every year to get it. It was the only place I ever saw that sold it.

I loved Bushsbaum's work. He was the best. Even today. He'd highlight about 6 or 8 players at every position. I'd read it and try to figure out who the Bolts would take. So much fun.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

PFW still the best draft guide, IMHO

Couldn't wait for Joel's draft guide. Never a big Kiper guy but loved Joel's stuff. I thought of him as much older than 48 when he passed. Sad

This is an awesome read. Thanks Bonehead. I used to buy the Buschbaum draft guide each year. Not real professional, especially in the early years, but great info. I used to skip school to watch the draft on ESPN when they started. People thought I was crazy!

I remember getting my dad to buy me Street and Smiths Pro Football yearbook starting in 69-70.....I used to just read them cover to cover and over and over... I think the first one I got when I was 13 had Roman Gabriel on the cover

                      Great read !

I don't feel quite so weird for being a total NFL Draft wonk.

As an admirer and customer of Joel Buchsbaum, having purchased his Draft Preview Guide on numerous occasions, I would say he was, literally, a football savant.

The day after NE was eliminated from the playoffs, Belichick drove down to Joel Buchsbaum's funeral.

                      'Nuff said.
