San Diego has worked out Thomas at OF and 3B and now it is being reported that San Fran is also looking into Thomas at 3B to possibly replace Sandoval.

Corey Brock of MLB.com said the Padres and Red Sox have talked about a possible Cespedes trade and mentions Kennedy as a possible match. The one good thing that will bring down Cespedes trade value is he is only under contract for one season. Of course that could also be a bad thing for the team that acquires him.

A dream come true for me would be to somehow end up with the Cuban tandem of Cespedes and Thomas.
I agree on dream scenario, but would be surprised if BOS is satisfied with Kennedy.

As for Tomas' position, it's true that it seems to be predominantly NL teams in the hunt. But everything I've read about him suggests he's really got substandard speed. When I say DH-type, I guess I mean more of a guy that just doesn't have a position/offer much on D. I guess I would hope that he could learn to play 3B, then. Another alternative would be to return Gyorko to his natural position, play Tomas at first and look for a 2B out on the market (which is easier than finding a good 3B or a real 1B with pop). Perhaps Spangenberg or the kid we got from the Angels might be ready to make the jump.

In our big OF we really need guys that can run. Cespedes was brought up as a CF so has an arm and good speed. He'd prob be a plus defender in left for us.

Maybe something like Kennedy and Grandal for Cespedes and a low level fringe prospect.

I'm not really ready to give up on Grandal. There's another option:

        C Rivera
        1B Grandal
        2B Gyorko
        SS Cabrera?
        3B Tomas
        RF Smith
        CF Maybin?
        LF Cespedes

        1 Cabrera
        2 Smith
        3 Grandal
        4 Cespedes
        5 Gyorko
        6 Tomas
        7 Rivera
        8 Maybin

Maybin's so injury prone I hate to even put him in there, but he's a placeholder unless we can do better via trade.

I haven't given up on Grandal at all but I would be willing to use him to trade up for a better player if the possibility presents itself. There has also been several reports that the Padres are listening to offers on all of their catchers in order to acquire a bat. They view catchers as a surplus right now with Grandal, Rivera and Hedges.

Thomas signed with Arizona. Six years for $68.5M with opt out clause after 4.

Rejected by Sandoval and Thomas so far. Going to be a slow rebuild. Oh well, guess they will have to find a good bat via trade.

I prefer that we sign starting pitchers Justin Masterson and Francisco Liriano (and maybe even re-sign Josh Johnson) and then trade Kennedy and Cashner for hitters.
