Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu was activated from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday, returning from multiple knee ligament tears incurred in December. Mathieu overtook Rashad Johnson at safety and was a key contributor as the nickel defensive back even before that. Mathieu declared himself ready in July, but head coach Bruce Arians said the team would take it very slow and follow a conservative plan in bringing him back to the practice field. The Cardinals might choose to hold Mathieu out of the regular-season opener Sept. 8 against the San Diego Chargers.
