With the underwear olympics coming up, a lot of big guys are going to get knocked down a lot in the mock drafts. Once 40 times and measureables start to come out, the mock draft crowd always start to fall in love with guys who are good (not great) players and then they see the numbers and they blow a nut. Happens every year. I think most NFL teams have already made up their minds, and just use the numbers to answer questions on guys.
If you see a RB and he always seems to be getting caught from behind, and then he runs a bad 40, then you are sure he doesn't have break away speed. Of course, if he is a short yardage specialist, then you probably don't care, but if he is a 3rd down back, he might not be the guy you want to spend a draft pick on.
But if a guy you have watched run away from everyone on the field for 30 games of his college career runs a bad 40 time, it doesn't mean the guy is slow. It means he either doesn't know how to run on a track or he had a bad day. I watch so many guys run the 40 at the combine and they don't know what they are doing. Besides hurting their intelligence grades, it really doesn't mean much. Guys will take a false step on their start. Probably around half of them weave back and forth in the lane so their 40 time is really more like 45 yards. So just don't get too hung up on the measureables . If the guy can play, he can play.
