    Golden Boy. RIP, Paul Hornung

    April 17, 1963

Green Bay Packers halfback Paul Hornung and Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alex Karras probably would have taken even money that they would never be suspended for betting on NFL games. But they would have lost that wager as NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle suspends the two stars indefinitely for betting on league games and associating with gamblers or "known hoodlums."

Before my time, I started watching professional football in 1976, my first game was Pittsburg vs. Dallas in SB 10. -- Suspended during his prime in 1963, Paul Hornung is up there with the all-time greats who built this league. RIP.

the only reason I know him is because LT was breaking his records left and right.

Kids decide to memorize weird things. I memorized Super Bowl stats of the first 10 Super Bowls and the great Lombardi teams.

Consider this: In 1954, the N.Y. Giants offensive coordinator was Vince Lombardi. The N.Y. Giants defensive coordinator was Tom Landry.

I remember that. He came off looking a bit biter that LT broke his single season scoring record. He was boasting he did it in 14 games and it was better because it took LT 16 games to break it. He did nt mention that he was the kicker as well. LT was only the RB.

It was pretty classless, he should have just congratulated LT like any other player does when someone breaks their record.

This was the high-water mark of the Charger organization, LT breaking Hornung's record and AJ is looking on.

Would love to talk that thunder & lighting tandem with Jim Taylor but neither was lighting.

Still a mystery as to how Hornung won a Heisman.
