Over Under on Melvin Ingram Sacks

On June 11, 2017, Ingram signed a four-year, $66 million contract with $42 million guaranteed with the Chargers.

It will be his 10th season. He has had 2 seasons with double digit sacks in his career. Both 10.5 (2015,2017)

He is averaging 5.3 sacks per year. With the 42 million guaranteed only. That is about 2 million per sack.

How many sacks will Melvin Ingram need for the Chargers to offer him another contract?

Seriously doubt Mel gets 10+ sacks this year...last two years have been 7 sacks, so, I'm guessing 6-7 next year...$66 mil is just too much to pay a mediocre pass rusher on the downhill slope of his career...

Sacks are nice but not the end all for a pass rusher.

True however it is what they are mostly measured by. He is not playing at the level of his contract...

Yep...that good old burst of adrenaline to rake in the big $$$...kind of like how Lazy Gaither suddenly transformed from a slacker to All-Pro form for those 5 games before he suckered AJ Smith into handing out a $24 million contract, after which Big Lazy laughed all the way to the bank...

Sacks are only 1 component of an EDGE defender value.
How does he play the run, produce pressures/unintended QB movement, make defensive stops, turnover opportunities created, TFL, situational versatility........

Ingram is a hard worker though. Look at what he did in 2015, two years before his rookie contract expired. He'll end up being let go now because of his age and because we have younger priorities like Bosa to take care of now.

It really shouldn't though. Just like interceptions are not what CBs should be mostly judged by.

I dont think he's nearly as disruptive as his counterpart. There are games where he is nowhere near the QB. dunno if it's the gameplan or he just sucked, but I remember seeing him standing there not even engaging a lineman on more than 1 occasion when he couldnt get past him on the initial burst. Bosa is constantly fighting even if he is getting stonewalled. it's like if mi doesnt get to the QB in the first 1.5 seconds it is over for him.
