I agree completely. Mathews plays with some desire and Reyes has just seemed over-matched. Maybe losing his starting role would wake Reyes up.

I've been down on Reyes ever since he got flicked around like a dried up booger by Louis Vasquez in the playoff game last year. Ricardo Mathews seems to play with a passion, I would rather see him get more snaps and see what he can do.

Yep. This is the other side of wanting a legitimate starting NT. It would free up Lissemore to take over at 3-4 DE opposite Liuget. This, in turn, would maximize Reyes' value as a pass rushing DL player because he could be kept fresh for just those situations. But I would not let him set foot on the field until the defense was in a very long down and distance situation such as 2nd and 15 or more or 3rd and 7 or more. Anything less than that presents a running opportunity for our opponents with Reyes on the field.

Any of our other defensive linemen are more stout than Reyes, but I agree that Mathews would be the best choice among them to start. Again, if we ever get or develop a true starting NT, then Lissemore would be the best 3-4 DE to use instead of Reyes.

I don't have Steve-like abilities so I can't tell who is at fault for our d line woes. Is it just Reyes who sucks? He generally gets better as the season progesses.

After a loss like yesterday, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to put a couple of guys (Butler, Reyes) 'on notice'. That is, step it up or you'll be riding the pine. I would be 100% in favor of starting Conner over Butler; and Matthews over Reyes. Christ, it can't just be business as usual after a game like that.
