Los Angeles Chargers rookie Justin Herbert has stepped up in his first four NFL games, throwing for nearly 1200 yards and 10 total touchdowns on the year so far. While he hasn't yet achieved his first NFL win, Herbert has been very impressive on the stat sheet with very strong numbers in a number of categories.

Ranking among the top ten in quarterback ranking of all NFL quarterbacks, Herbert has been especially good when it counts. According to the Toronto Sun's John Kryk, Herbert has the best passer rating of NFL quarterbacks on 3rd down this season.

Herbert's 3rd down passer rating of 150.9 and completion percentage of 74% rank above Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes, Buffalo's Josh Allen and Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger.

If Herbert has shown everyone a glimpse of just how good he will be right now after what we have seen from him in 4 games imagine how good he will be in 2 years or from now. Imagine how good he's going to be once he starts to learn how to read a defense. He's making throws that not even Rivers could make.

I think the offseason work with the QB consultant and Pep Hamilton are the biggest reasons for his early success.

Herbert worked a lot throwing to Hunter Henry and Keenan Allen in the offseason. Those are his two favorite receivers.

Yep...with Shottenheimer, it was when the Bolts would get a 7-point lead or so, then he'd go conservative somewhere in the 4th quarter with "Marty Ball." And we lost a lot of those games. With Lynn and Stitch, the play-calling in the first half is generally very good, a nice mix of running plays, short passes, screen passes and the long ball. Then, somewhere in the second half, for some inexplicable reason, the playcalling goes conservative, with a lot of 3-and-outs...then our D is on the field more, gets gassed, and to top it off, Gus is unwilling or unable to make adjustments to handle the opposing team's hurry-up offense...prescription for disaster...when are we going to hire a decent coaching staff?

Schottenheimer went for it on 4rth down twice in that final playoff loss. He was roundly criticized for NOT handing it off to LT in the 2nd half.

Injuries to Merriman, Phillips, & 3 careless unforced turnovers in the 2nd half killed them that day.
There were two stupid unsportsmanlike penalties in the 2nd half aiding eventual Patriot scores.
There was that 3rd down drop by Vincent Jackson on the 2nd to last drive.
Having that Iowa kid as your big game field goal kicker didn't help.

Just a shit storm of mistakes, errors on the individual level.

Obviously, each game is different. I was referring to how Marty played "Martyball" on and off over many games over his years with us...

Saw just two plays:

1. Oline/tight end seem to be run blocking, and Herbert does a play action to the fullback. Pipkens with a complete, stumbling whiff causes lineman to steam roll towards Herbert.
* narrator thinks its a running play in which Herbert should have handed ball off - Herbert blew it. I think it could be a play action to get linebackers to bite and sneak slot receiver into the back of the endzone

2. Mike Williams gets open deep and Herbert under throws him. Herbert gets blasted in chest by lineman (with Groy as the proverbial bug on windshield) while throwing.
* narrator does the lame Guyton is open in the flat (if the ball gets to him instantaneously) routine

His take: Herbert made a lot of mistakes.

My take: he's an idiot; Pipkens and Groy are god-awful; and i have to stop typing in Rivers name first.
