    Rest in Peace Mr. Dean.

Yes, Eugen Klein was a cheaper cheapskate than Spanos. Remember when he had a heart attack over Al Davis' antitrust lawsuit against the league? That was why he had to sell the team to Alex Spanos, who was actually buds with Al.

Bill Walsh made Fred Dean the first pass rush specialist in the NFL. When Dean was told he was not going to be a three-down player, he'd be in only passing downs, he was at first insulted. But when it worked out so well, and he became a star, and the 49ers won the Super Bowl, he was totally on board.

Dean was a smoker, even during his playing days. It wouldn't be allowed now, but back then some players still smoked. If his lungs were compromised, that may explain why he succumbed to the lung-attacking virus.

One of my favorite players at the time and I will always regret his going to the 49ers.

Barron Hilton probably would not have been a cheap owner. He sold the team to Klein in the '60s because the family hotel chain was on the rocks and his partners wanted his full attention. He often talked about how much he regretted selling the team. A very young Jerry Jones wanted to buy the team from Hilton, but it went to Klein instead. Alex Spanos tried to buy the 49ers in the '70s but he got out-bid by Eddie DeBartolo's dad. That is the team he really wanted. He was from Stockton and a Niners fan and was really peeved when he lost out on that chance. So when the Klein was forced to sell the Bolts due to his Al-Davis-induced heart attack, Spanos was determined not to be out-bid.

              Just damn sad.
What a great player that should’ve been paid and played his entire career in SD.

says it all. One man wrecking crew but had great partners on the line. Probably my favorite era of Chargers football was those early Coryell years. He famously said his brother who was a truck driver made more money than him and the chargers shipped him to SF where he won titles. We weren’t the same after he left.
I remember the figure to be $50,000 per year to play in San Diego that last year.

I'm always glad when someone remembers Jones. He didn't get the publicity that the other three got, but he was good. He was the one who blocked Miami's field goal attempt in the famous 1981 game:

68 is still relatively young, so I suppose he had other issues.
Agreed!! That was one heck of a front. If I remember right, the defense went straight south with the loss of Fred Dean. They were more than a serviceable defense before his departure, but they decided to go to a 3 - 4 alignment afterwards I believe.. and presto, the Chargers quickly became one of the truly worse defenses of all-time!

The more points that high powered offense would score, the more points that defense would give up. There were some nice players on that side of the ball still, but the scheme certainly did not mesh well with the players they had on the defensive side.
