Who is # 7 right now in the AFC ?

You have 5 teams at 6-3 for the Wild Card spots in AFC.
MIA and LV have a better record in conference.
BAL has advantage on CLE with better record in the division.
TEN and BAL are 6-3 and 4-3 in AFC right now, I don't know who is #7.
These two teams will meet next Sunday...

Yes Colts are in 1st place in their division.

So that would put them at 4th place now.

Yeah, but not much at this point considering the sad state of the Chargers., I will say this Lamar Jackson is not built for the playoffs.

Its because Jackson might be the best pure elusive runner in NFL...... and he has a strong arm, but he is not, and never has been consistently accurate...not in college and not in pros... .. his TE has been making awesome acrobatic catches of badly off-target passes..... when you are one dimensional, it is difficult to win in playoffs because you only play good teams and most teams that make playoffs, can stop the run......

The top 4 seeds are the division winners who are ranked by record. Head-to-head record is the first tie breaker used within a division to break a tie. So, because IND beat TEN, we have the following for the first four teams:

                      1. PIT (9-0)
                      2. KC (8-1)
                      3. BUF (7-3)
                      4. IND (6-3)

For the potential wild card teams, there are 5 teams at 6-3. First, ties within a division are broken. So, we have BAL and CLE from the AFCN. BAL beat CLE, so CLE is eliminated from the group of 5. Next is head-to-head sweep, but the remaining teams (LV, MIA, BAL, TEN) have not all played each other, so we move on to conference record as the next tie breaker. We have LV at 4-2, MIA at 3-2, BAL at 4-3 and TEN at 4-3. So, LV is in as the #5 seed and we go back to the beginning of the tie breaker rules, which, by the same process, results in MIA getting the #6 seed.

So, we then revert back to the beginning of the two step wild card tie breaking procedure to break the tie between BAL and TEN for the #7 spot. There is no head-to-head result, so we move on to conference record. Both teams are 4-3 in the conference, so the next step is common opponents with a minimum of four games in common. BAL and TEN have each played against PIT, IND, CIN and HOU. BAL is 2-2 in those games and TEN is 1-3. So, BAL wins the tie breaker over TEN and is in as of now as the #7 seed.

But even though CLE was eliminated before TEN, CLE has the edge over TEN for the #8 seed based again upon its record in common games. TEN is assigned the #9 seed at present.

This should be merged with the playoffs thread that already exists so as to keep this discussion in one place. Coming off the victory over the Jags in Week 7 the Chargers had a chance to make a move on a wildcard spot, but losing to Denver, Vegas and Miami wiped that out. The three wild card seeds right now are 5. Raiders 6. Dolphins (both with help from the Bolts ) 7. Ravens. Outside looking in are 8. Browns 9. Titans. 10. Patriots. 11. Broncos 12. Bengals 13. Chargers. The Jets have made a few teams well this season. The Cards for example were on a 2-game losing streak then played the Jets and have won 4 of 5. The 'Fins were 2-3 when they played the Jets and now have won 4 straight, with wins over some good teams (Rams, Cards). But even if they prove to be an elixir for the Chargers, it won't get the Bolts into the playoffs. The only chance the Chargers have is to go undefeated for the rest of the season, including games @ Bills, @ Raiders and @ Chiefs. And if they manage to pull off that miracle, sitting at 9-7 they still might not get in. The Chargers' already slim playoff chances died in those mind-numbing losses to the Broncos and Raiders.
