Filmroom - The 3-4 Defense and Wade Phillips

    Attack Gap.png

This is first drive of the Super Bowl, 1st Quarter: 1st & 10. Rams are in their base 3-4 set, 3 down linemen and Dante Fowler is the stand-up ROLB in Wade's scheme. Brady is under-center instead of shotgun. Brady at Pre-snap read, Patriots first possession and they haven't thrown the ball yet. Edelman is in motion to Trent Brown's weak side. The Patriots are running out of a traditional I-back formation.

This is the difference in Wade's scheme: They don't read-and-react, they attack the gap, not the man. 99 Aaron McDonald and 93 N. Suh are going to attack their gaps, McDonald is attacking the OG/LT gap between Joe Thuney & Trent Brown.

15:13 - At the snap, Aaron McDonald is in the backfield, and makes the pursuit tackle for a 3 yard gain.

15:30 - This is an excellent concept illustration of the Wade Phillips 3-4. With attacking gaps, you are wreaking havoc in the backfield, consistently.

15:52 Very next play 2nd & 7. Brady is in the shotgun and hasn't attempted a pass yet. Defense is a zone drop out and LB Corey Littleton gets into a diagonal drop into the protect the flat. It WAS zone, and Brady was fooled and made a mistake.

16:42 - Tony Romo - Wade was quoted as saying the key to the game was presenting Brady with a matchup that looked like man, but was zone, and a zone that looked like man. You had to mix your coverages, in order to fool Brady. Brady threw a pick with his first pass. Wade's pressure scheme had caused Belichick enough confusion to cause a turnover on their 7th play from scrimmage.

The Rams went on kept the Patriots out of the endzone for 53 minutes. The Pats scored 1 TD and 3 first downs for the entire game and 0 for 1 on 4th Down, and they sacked Brady 4 times.

And Wade blitzed through the A gaps just enough to keep the Patriots from consistently zoning in on Donald

And Belichick would counter, by trap blocking the gap shooting in the A and B gaps, all game long, expending all their energies to try to produce yardage. Rams held them to 3 for 13 on first downs. That is championship level defensive play.

Took Belichick 53 minutes to get into the endzone.

I believe that my first preference is Dave Toub as head coach and Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.

We dont currently have the personel for the 3-4......

Bosa is a better 4-3 end...than 3-4 end... we need a great NT (like Jamaal Williams was)to handle middle.... we also need 3 additional kick-ass LBers like Micah Parsons, and Jabril Cox - LSU (coverage guy), and Palaie Gaoteote IV - USC..... to go with Murray.......and we need at least one stud CB who can cover one on one against the other teams best to allow lots of blitzing......

we need a better punter and kicker to win Field position game.....no matter who the coaches end up being.....

we need another stud all round WR to play opposite KA since we are not likely to resign Williams......

We need a big strong fast all around every down RB who wont get hurt every few games......

We need a real receiving threat at TE...... when healthy, Henry is just a solid all round TE like Seivers was.....

If Bosa s getting tired and worn out at 4-3 then it would be worse at 3-4 where double teams are by default. Dude would be a 3-4 DE rather than OLB. He'd do better than average. Tillery at 3-4 DE would be pushed back. Plus we need a J-Wall.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley runs a unique variation of the 4-3 that pulls from multiple defensive philosophies, utilizing something called a LEO. We explain what this all means.

I'm going to differ with you, friend. IMO, You need three massive interior down-linemen, and LEO.

This article here says the the purpose of the above four players: In very simple terms, the defense is less concerned with pure speed and penetration, and more concerned with building a wall from sideline-to-sideline.

Gus' s defense is designed to be a picket, East-and-West. Wade's 3-4 uses three massive interior down-linemen, and LEO and attacks the A and B Gaps, which runs North and South.

The most interesting of the lot is the Phillips 3-4 (named after Bum Phillips), which Wade ran in both Dallas and Houston (and other places he's coached). It is by far my favorite front seven style in the NFL, because it is an attacking, one-gap-penetration style (including the down linemen) that is all about enforcing your will on the opposing offense, rather than responding to the opposing offense. If you watch it closely, you'll find it runs a lot like the one-gap-attack-style of the Kiffin 4-3, and really nothing like the traditional 3-4 at all.
Now, Wade's model with the three massive interior down-linemen, and LEO is pure speed and penetration.

The scheme we run should have Bosa’s best fit as the primary consideration imo
                  Obviously
but thus far I think that’s as a 43 DE
                  .005 Brock Bowers, TE/HB/SR Georgia
.037 Braden Fiske, DT Florida St.
                  .069 Mike Sainristil, CB Michigan
                  .105 Brenden Rice, WR USC
                  .110 Mason McCormick, OG/OC S. Dakota St.
                  .140 Zak Zinter, OG Michigan
                  .181 Nehemiah Pritchett, CB Auburn
.225 Ainias Smith, WR Texas A&M
                  .253 Carson Steele, RB UCLA

And arguably Ingram's. I think his best years were when he transformed his body and we switched to a 4-3.

We got away with a 3-4 since we had J-Wall and a couple of solid years from Antonio Garay. Both these guys commanded double teams and could still get in the backfield. We had much heavier LBers and average 3-4 DE's. Shaun Philips at 6-3 255lbs has 81 career sacks. The other OLB was freakin Shawne Merrimen and his dominant 3 seasons. This is a bigger/heavier/longer duo than Ingram/Bosa which is needed in 3-4 OLBs.

What about a 3-3 - Bosa type defense - which is in fact a 4-3 but if Wade is coaching it - call it what the hell you want.

I would love Wade as the head coach at this time. He would coach a productive defense.
