Same...he 'won' the '81 playoff game vs Miami, so he was a hero in my 7-year-old eyes. Shifted to a Winslow fan soon thereafter, but #6 was the first favorite.
Generally the entire offense of the early 80s. We had a few pro bowlers on the line, Fouts, all the WR, Winslow and the RBs (Muncie, Brooks, Lionel James). So many weapons you knew they were going to put up 30+ pts every game.
And Don Coryell still scowling away on the sideline lol
I hear that. I was the same age at the time. My father was a Rams fan and I just remember telling him that the Chargers were much more fun to watch than the Rams.
LOL! I started out a Rams fan too (having lived in Santa Barbara my first 6 years). I loved their DL (Jack Youngblood, Merlin Olsen, Hacksaw Reynolds, Fred Dryer). When I was 7 we moved to SD but I kept my allegiance to the Rams (Chargers were pretty bad in the early 70's).
When I was 10 (1976) my dad took me to Jack Murphy stadium for my first live football game. The Chargers hosted my beloved Rams. I was surprised to see that the Chargers DL was every bit as good as the Rams DL. I couldn't understand why the Chargers' fans kept booing their own team, though. That Big Louuuuuuuie Kelcher guy had one hell of a game....
So, I'd say Louie Kelcher was the first Chargers' player I was a fan of. Of course a couple years later Air Coryell would make me forget about the Rams altogether.
My favorite Chargers in order:
1. Ladanian Tomlinson
2. Junior Seau
3. John Jefferson
