Welcome Bolts New ST's Coach Derius Swinton II

Former Arizona Cardinals assistant special teams coach Derius Swinton II has a new gig in the NFL.

Swinton, who served on Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s staff in varying roles from 2019-2020, is joining the Los Angeles Chargers’ staff as the team’s special teams coach.

Swinton was hired by Kingsbury as an NFL diversity coaching fellow in 2019 before being promoted to a full-time role in 2020.

Swinton previously had assistant coaching jobs with the St. Louis Rams, Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2019.

The move, which was first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com on Saturday, is the first addition to new Chargers head coach Brandon Staley’s staff.

The 35-year-old began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant at Tennessee in 2007, before moving to the NFL in 2009.

        Welcome coach!
haven't read anything yet but looking at his coaching destinations from wikipedia, I noticed a snag in his coaching career that I intend to research further
but I've got high hopes at the moment as I would with any new hire assuming Staley has his stamp on it

IMO special teams cost us at least two wins last year. I’m rooting for Swinton and aside from FGs I just don’t want to have to pray every time we even set up for a kick on both sides. Fix it and give Herbert some short fields and he’s money.

Im trusting Staley on his staff picks. Any coaching move on STs is an upgrade.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

              The bar is low coach.

Just competent Special Teams play... middle of the pack = a GIANT improvement.

excited to have some new blood in there.

ST was must watch TV. It was like watching the chargers in the red zone for me. I was expecting a punt to get blocked, or muffed punt each time against the chargers.

If the Chargers special teams are like 14 to 18 in the league and the OL like 12-15 in metrics/rankings - would be huge gains to the W column I would think. Missed FGs, blocked kicks, return yardage, penalties to cost yardage - needs to be fixed.

i hope Coach Swinton has both the teaching and Telesco gets him the players to succeed.

Do we think they keep Badgley and Long or look to replace them? I’m sure there is some coaching for those guys, but I tend to think that they are what they are.

Hopefully we bring in competition for existing ST players. Most of his resume is ST work so experience is definitely there. Just don’t lose games for us on ST and he will be the greatest hire this team has seen in a decade.

I was so sick of seeing the opponents overload the offensive right side and send a man in unblocked on kicks and punts. You'd think there would be an adjustment after the first dozen times or so.
