Welcome Tre' McKitty, TE Georgia (Pick #97)

    Pre-Draft Analysis

McKitty shows the ability to create separation and find soft spots in zone coverage. He displays strong hands in traffic and does a good job of plucking the ball away from his frame. He was underutilized during his college career, but he showcased his higher ceiling at the Senior Bowl. -- Steve Muench

    Post-Draft Analysis

Last year the Chargers got their franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert, who had an impressive rookie season despite subpar offensive line play. Now they need to find a way to keep him upright and put him in position to continue to get better while also improving an average run game. Slater is an immediate upgrade over Trey Pipkins and should protect Herbert for years. -- Muench

Tre’ McKitty aligned as the “move tight end” for the Bulldogs offense. He has good athleticism, as evidenced by his good body control and agility. In the run game, he is willing to stick his face in the trenches and block. He will not be a vertical mover, nor will he create a new line of scrimmage, but he has adequate blocking ability. He is dynamic as a pass-catcher due to his outstanding “un after catch ability. He had a knee scope just before the start of the season and it is unknown how healthy he was playing in 2020.

Ideal Role: No. 2 tight end with starting potential.

      Scheme Fit: Any passing offense.

          Brugler’s review:
          7. Tre’ McKitty, Georgia (6-foot-4, 247 pounds)

Wesley Chapel, Fla. (IMG Academy); Age: 22.30

A one-year starter at Georgia, McKitty was a “move” tight end in offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s scheme while lining up mostly inline and wing. After 49 combined catches as a sophomore and junior at Florida State, he was one of the key free-agent signings for the Bulldogs last offseason, but he saw only 10 targets in 2020 and was underutilized as a pass-catcher throughout his collegiate career (never eclipsed 70 yards receiving in any of his 42 career games).

A well-built, balanced athlete, McKitty has strong hands and the ability to make catches with defenders draped all over him. As a blocker, he needs to improve his sustain skills, but he plays with the pop, power and toughness to be a solid positional blocker. Overall, McKitty must do a better job getting open and giving his quarterback an open target, but he has the blocking chops and receiving skills to compete for a backup tight end role in the NFL.

McKitty transferred from Florida State to Georgia for the 2020 season after a productive career with the Seminoles. He excelled for the Bulldogs as a receiver (six catches, 108 yards, 18.0 average, one touchdown) and a blocker in seven starts after returning from a preseason knee injury. He accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. He played in 11 games as a reserve his true freshman year (one catch, 23 yards) before becoming a starter in 2018 (26 catches, 256 yards, 9.8 average, 10 starts in 12 games). McKitty started nine of 12 contests as a junior, making 23 receptions for 241 yards (10.5 per). He was a first-team All-USA Today Florida selection as a senior at IMG Academy before moving to Tallahassee for 2017. -- by Chad ReuterPass-catching tight end who can be asked to do some minor positional blocking up front, but he's better as a move blocker. McKitty's play speed doesn't always match his real speed, which is a problem in terms of his separation and ball tracking. He's better up the seam and on the move than he is getting in and out of breaks. If he can get stronger and learn to play faster as a pass catcher, he might have a chance as a developmental TE3.
            Strengths
            • Looked fairly athletic and fluid as a pass catcher when at Florida State.
            • Athleticism and toughness to work the deep middle.
            • Hands appear fairly natural catching on the move.
            • Adequate speed and wiggle to add yards after catch.
            • Adjusts to moving bodies in space when blocking on perimeter.
            • Reworks hands back into frame during block sustain.
            • Based upon Georgia tape, might be able to offer some help in pass protection.
            Weaknesses
            • Not a natural dog at the point of attack.
            • Throws too many shoulders and not enough hands.
            • Needs to become tougher block-finisher as a pro.
            • Routes can be easily redirected in space.
            • Inconsistent hitting true play speed in routes.
            • Needs to become more aggressive shedding defenders at top of the route.
            • A little slow getting in and out of breaks underneath.
            • Very average catch focus in the midst of traffic.

I think, from what I'm reading here, that both Palmer and McKitty are not bad players, per se; just bad picks in that many feel they were taken a round too early. This might have been better news if it were our two 4th - and not 3rd - round picks. As it were, we may be looking at a two-round draft (Slater/Samuel) when it comes to guys who will make an immediate impact? I have to admit, a little disappointing.
