If he can come in 15-20 times on obvious passing downs to spell Bosa or team with him and actually get some rush pressure that will be worth it. Too often it was Bosa or no one.

Is it possible that the Chargers drafted him with Mahomes scrambling in mind. It sounds like he might be quick enough to catch him in some of those highlight reel, improvised completions Mahomes id famous for.

I think they draft him because he's got really good bend around the edge, a high motor, and a really advanced group of pass rushing moves for a college player. His Dad's is a professional coach who was a coach in the college ranks before that. If he can add and maintain some functional added weight from his 225 playing weight, to go along with his length and athleticism he could end up being a really great value pick for us.

I’m sure that is one of his traits we valued.
Rumph’s ability to pressure the QB from a variety of alignments and versatility/athleticism to drop into coverage.
His length is great @6’3” with almost 34” arms along with his flexibility to bend the arc, arsenal of passrush moves, leadership/team captain, and his ability to get small but play big.
Chris will have to improve his overall strength profile to improve anchor/ability to set the edge in the run game.

If he can rack up an average of 10 sacks per season that would mean he was a steal in this draft and he would be filling his role nicely as a pressure edge on obvious passing downs.

              I agree with this.

The best QBs in the league extend plays, especially Mahomes. If nothing else, Rumph has an excellent motor. He squiggles into the backfield early and often and doesn’t quit, even after 2nd efforts. His arms are long enough to keep tackles from latching.

We need constant, aggressive pursuit to keep those QBs from buying enough time to let WRs break coverage. Rumph was drafted for that purpose (and special teams).
Our quarterback is a golden god.

                Rumph working Jedrick Wills.......

Good video clips of Chris. Don’t read the article as there are several inaccuracies.

Barnes had great, great speed off the edge. He didn't have any other moves to go with it, but at the time, we needed him to get around the corner and he did that for Manusky.

Rumph is a technique guy. Good hand use and no wasted motion to the QB. Rumph's speed is nothing special, but he can chase guys down from behind because he just never quits. We simply cannot have enough pass rushers. Rumph can rush inside and outside. He could really help compliment Bosa, much like Ingram did lining up inside, and then stunting outside. If he can push the QB towards Bosa, and force some bad throws, then our secondary will get some turnovers. Bosa will get some sacks. Rumph runs some really good stunts, and we now have some other players who stunt well.

As far as his size goes, Elvis Dumervil played at about 220-225 most of his career. He was shorter, but he didn't have a lot of lead in his butt either. If he is just going to be a situational rusher, or even Will OLB where he is rushing against space, then he doesn't need much size. Greg Lloyd was another 225 lb OLB who could rush the QB, and was another good all around speed guy who got pushed around some in the run game.

I am not sure why he necessarily needs to turn into a good run player. Don't get me wrong, I am fine if he does. But he will be judged by everyone based on his ability to get after the QB. If he can get sacks cleanly, set other players up to get sacks (Bosa) or finish up for other players, then his ability to stop the run is not that important. Teams are throwing the ball more than 50% of the time now, and those are the plays when the ball can be taken away much, much easier than when a RB has the ball wrapped up on a quick dive. Sacks create enough field position that they have a tangible outcome on scoring (on average).

                    We need EDGE DEPTH...
We need more quality EDGE players in the rotation...
Give Bosa a break to catch his breath...
Tired of watching our gassed D getting gashed for gobs of yardage...
I have the feeling Staley will take care of this a LOT better than Gus...

                      Agree. #BreathersforBosa

How often in the 4th quarter was that dude gassed and still playing his heart out? Part of closing out games is having your impact players making impact plays in the final minutes.

Maybe Bosa needs to be in better shape

Maybe Bosa needs to stop bein double and triple teamed every play.
