I am worried about the Chargers being able to retain Rumph after he wins rookie of the year (for both offense and defense because he was just that good) and league MVP. Telesco would be smart to sign him to an extension now, even before he plays a game on his first contract.

LOL. You mean regular season? Even camp stars doesn’t translate to regular season stars sometimes. I remember hearing so much Dylan Cantrell hype during camp. We all know he didn’t do squat in the regular season.

I knew he’d bust the first route I saw him run against a backup/ST-caliber DB in a PS game. No moves, no speed, no nothing there.

I said the same after the first time I saw Stick throw a 15 yard out. you can write that one down too - he will never be an NFL QB. an NFL QB needs and NFL arm and he just doesn’t have one, i don’t care how many Bison victories or rushing yards he rolled up.

Camp is the beginning. After training camp starts the Chargers season is underway. If the players & coaches think a guy is fun to be around, another guy is more bulked up, so what? No need to preemptively hate on them.
I like beginnings.

Maybe Rumph will turn out to be a steal - a sack leader, etc. Shaun Phillips had a productive career and was a 4th round pick.

The one glaring negative regarding Rumph is that he's said to be a liability against the run, and that as bad as he was in that regard in college, it could be a HUGE problem as a pro.

So, personally, I'm cautiously optimistic.

as a rookie, maybe we put him in to close games we have a lead in?

Situational snaps, for sure. How many of those kinds of snaps do you have to have to make it worth designating a game day roster spot to Rumph? That's most likely the calculation the coaches will have to make.
