This is the first season he's gotten back into it, started last season as it seems Herbert is capable of transcending the SD/LA BS. He's been in my ear texting me last few days during the draft.

It's given my pops and I something fun and good to talk about.
      Glad to hear it!
Most of my wife's family & our family were SD Chargers fans. Most dropped the NFL & Chargers over the LA move & kneeling. Our oldest son (48) was the most PO'd.
We go fishing, have meals at each other's place & so on but Chargers/NFL are an unwelcome topic.
Our youngest son (43) & I still enjoy all things Chargers when it's just us talking.
Winning should help spread the joy if they don't ruin it with race politics.

Man this sounds like my family, but it's improving because of Herbert. He's a good kid!

And those are straight facts, race and politics turns everything Ugly.

Regarding Lombardi, he was in NO, then DET, then back to NO.

At DET, Lombardi failed by being too "wooden."

Back at NO, Joe was a new man, scarred but wiser.

We will get "postdoctorate" Joe Lombardi...

              Agreed.
He seems like he learned to not be so rigid in philosophy.
Emphasize players strengths by adjusting the scheme to fit players not the adverse.
              Talent beats scheme 98%.

I don't think Staley would have hired Lombardi if he felt that he was getting the Detroit version. I expect him to do well for us.

I would hope that it would also incorporate a lot of the Shanahan scheme as well given the background of our QB and TE coach.

As Staley said, though, “Justin’s not Drew.” No one is Drew Brees. So the complexity of the Saints offense is not likely to be a direct carryover, especially in terms of the exhaustively long verbiage and how much the quarterback will be asked to do at the line of scrimmage. There should be elements from the Saints offense, like timing throws, specific route details and combinations and formations. But Staley said he will be “shaping” this offense for Herbert.

That means plucking concepts from other systems. Brees was perhaps the greatest processor in NFL history and lethally accurate. That is what made him a future Hall of Famer. Herbert’s skill set is different. He has a stronger arm and is bigger, faster and more athletic, though Brees, particularly early in his career, was a solid athlete. To maximize Herbert’s strengths, the Chargers will feature some aspects of a different variation of the West Coach offense — the Mike Shanahan system.

                          1. Maximize personnel packages and m9vement to maximize defensive hesitancy. Make the defense operate post snap.
                          2. Zone blocking
                          3. Play action
                          4. More downfield route concepts to play to Herbert's strengths and force the defense to defend more ground both horizontal and vertical.

We have a skill personnel grouping that can work this scheme much better than Detriot could.
