And to get the comp pick it involves not signing a free agent of value . Like the Ravens did this offseason to get their two comp picks in 2022

I actually would like to see him extended. Something 4/52
lower his cap number this year a bit but commit to him

You have to look at what replacing him would cost and what you could do with the money. Right now the cap space doesn't matter as there aren't any huge gets from a free agency point this is blocking.

Given what happened to free agent WRs this year I doubt he gets the same value on a long term deal. Also it is not like we have an alternative for WR2. Look at Corey Davis, would he really be any better?

So yes he is overpaid and hasn't been worth #7, but cutting him just to get cap space and making the team worse on the field doesn't help out.

The Chargers cannot cut him for cap space - his 15.7m is guaranteed

Now they can extend him and lower the cap number a bit . Corey Davis got 37.5/3. I am good giving Mike Williams (its not my money) like 54/4 to get him signed longer term. The fourth year is funny money as it is. Give Williams enough guarantees and spread it over 4 years.

This has been an ongoing topic by some for the past 2 years.
Yea this horse is not just dead its a rotting corpse that has been picked over by all carrion birds and beasts except for the topic starter.

If you do not understand what MW brings to the table than start with the basics like that football 101 class the NFL offers for women. Once the basics are understood we can go from there. MW is a beast. He is very valuable as a WR and should be extended.

Ninja I know YOU know what MW brings to the table but the OP has no idea.

              My thoughts?

              1. Incredible potential
              2. Big time flashes over the first few years
              3. Disappointing setbacks with injuries
              4. Production difficult, as his route tree often takes longer to develop, and our line hasn't provided as much time for QB past few years.
              5. He sucks at paintball

Great teammate who has given his all, but it just hasn't all come together...yet. I think he gets this year with a budding star QB, and an improved oline, to really break out...he develops a real chemistry with Herbie, and puts out serious production, he will get payed, and rightfully so.
The TPB makes plans....And Jim Harbaugh laughs...

Final prediction: Latham OT, Colson LB, Sainristil CB, Rice WR, Zinter OG, Nourzad OC, MacLachlan TE, Vidal RB, Lovett DT

Mike will be the beneficiary of an vastly improved offensive line. We'll run better and Herbert won't be running for his life every play, allowing Williams to have a bit more time to work himself open downfield. If he can stay healthy, and we know that is a big if for him (and why drafting Palmer made sense), he'll put up some big numbers.

Did Herbert evewr have a WR that can go up and get the ball like MW? Something he had to learn to throw

Keep mike, keep keenan, if we have a 1st rd pick in the back half like 20-32 draft justin ross, put ross and mike on the outside keenan in the slot. And wabam you got a deadly receiving core. A route technician, a jump ball specialist. And a circus catching run by you every time receiver in ross

The way he plays is amazing and why he gets injured so much. There’s probably a happy medium somewhere there.

First, player don't get paid for last years production. They get paid on what you expect the up coming production is going to be. You don't have to like it, but that what NFL contracts are. Just saying Last years production doesn't count if you don't think you can put it up this year.

This is a 5th year 1st, round draft pick thing. You don't get rid of 1st round picks in the 1st 4 years unless they are a disaster, and you need the 5th to give them one last year to take that step up. You have to be blind to not see how dominant he could be.

The 5th year of the contract is the year he has to step up and prove he is an elite WR. He hasn't even come close to that yet, although even in his inconsistent, injured play, he has put up reasonable production. Even his 1000 yd season was a disappointment. He was OK, but not 7th player in the draft expectations good.

Still, now is the put up or shut up time. Given the other WR we have, I think Williams is going to have to step upright from the get go. He isn't going to get a chance to play his way through a slow start, because we have some guys who can make some plays with Herbert. Still, they will want to give him the chance. It's not like anyone else has truely stepped up besides Kennan.

Let's see if he can stay on the field. Some guys just can never stay healthy, and other guys have just had some bad luck but then it turns and they're fine (like Keenan Allen).
