But we had Guyton and Johnson last year, who were not a lot better than Williams in terms of consistency, but they were about the same. If the choice is between 2 rookie contract guys with speed (and upside) and a top draft choice on his 2nd contract, who is going to get the nod?
The team has a new WR coach. MW may or may not improve depending on what Chris Beatty brings to table. MW needs to polish his skills. That is the part about his game that needs more work.

Good wider receivers are dime-a-dozen. You always hear about a WR who breaks out on a team. There's a reason why some teams don't go crazy over them. The position is easy to please. Unless MW really separates himself and proves to the team why they should keep him, he's a candidate for another team when he hits FA. This team will still feel comfortable about their two younger guys with upside if they continue to show promise.

Part of it could be the guy throwing too. For years we only ever saw Rivers throw jump balls on 3-4th down for MWill. Lets give him some crossing routes and watch him work

Mike Williams signature technique is to win, not by creating separation, but by winning 50-50's. Some WRs prefer having defenders in phase, right on their hip. They know just where the DB is, and are adept at screening them off.

This is opposed to having defenders laying off and jumping routes. It all adds up to MWilliams being an excellent receiver for both Rivers and Herbert, as these two QBs are good at ball placement.

Reassessing contract renewal after the 2021 season is the smart play. There's a lot of chihuahuas nipping at ankles around here in May of '21.

          Agree.

          Reps, reps and more reps.

It’s been said once and I’ll say it again, Herbert never had a WR like MW in the past. He needs to learn to use his unique skill set.

Once it clicks (and it will),
          watch out.

There’s an element of trust that must develop in order to throw to a WR who doesn’t appear to have separation. But that’s MW’s game. This takes time and practice.

I remember an old interview with Charles Barkley. He said his shot was always more accurate after absorbing contact.

Sometimes when you feel your competitor you can better control him.

When you have a great qb (especially accurate) it’s wise to get him weapons that depend on him more than the receiver.
I can accept the perspective that every NFL offense needs, “that guy” the 50/50, box out guy (wr or TE)
And while MW is ours, throwing to him usually means putting more faith in him than Herbert.
essentially, a crap qb can throw 50/50 balls to MW, we’re not taking advantage of Herbert’s skills (efficiently) when we do that.
so for that reason, if Palmer is a “big” wr that gets open through route-running, that’s ideal.

Mdub’s game is to win with positioning, strength, high point timing, etc. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that is better than just getting open. He’s a good receiver, i am comfortable whenever he’s on the field. Perfectly fine as of May 8 he is locked in for the 2021 season roster. But a “good” receiver is not hard to find as noted. We have thrived on filling #2 and #3 with “good” UDFAs for the last 20 yrs. so the value equation needs careful scrutiny for 2022, and it depends a lot on if Mike can demonstrate he is well above “good”.

ALL NFL players are elite and rare to a degree, so this is just relative notes not absolute. None of us are running out on a pro gridiron. but its just physiological bell curve distribution probabilities of adult men that its easier to find a 190-220 5’10”-6’4” man that can run fast and jump and reliably catch a ball than it is to find a 310 lb 6-5”+ man who can smoothly and quickly move his feet, maintain balance when hit moving laterally, etc. LTs cost so much because good ones are harder to find and the difference between good and bad is more significant. OGs cost less because they don’t require as much lateral movement ability in a perfectly controlled balanced strength status. Still valuable enough to earn $5M and up, so its not time to feel bad for them either.

Edit: WRs - same with RBs. The bell curve supplies a much greater population to pick thru to find a good RB.

But yeah, MW has to show quite a bit to earn a big next contract here.

The real question is if the Chargers can pay 30 millions for their 2 best WRs.

Williams is an overpiaid 50-50 keeper. He's made jump ball grabs like no other on this team that were needed at crucial times in games.

Not sure I agree with this.

You might in some cases need a more accurate quarterback for such a receiver. If a receiver is running completely free a QB can miss a yard or two in several directions and likely still get the ball completed. Throwing to covered receivers means throwing into the receiver's physical range of leverage. Often a smaller window if you want high completion percentage.

Qb needs to put it where a receiver can use his length and strength to wall off the db. A common example of this is QB's throwing to receiver's back shoulder.

                        Aaron Rogers does it routinely.
