  • Week 1 Bolts vs. WFT Screenshot Analysis

This was a good win for us. On the road, new playbook, a lot of new players. Some mistakes, but overall I really like what we did. Let's take a close look at some of the outstanding plays, along with some things that need to be improved going forward.

2nd quarter. Herbie drops back to pass. Okay, I get that blocking Chase Young (yellow) is a handful, and Bulaga (red) had his hands full. Pressure from Young forces Herbie into the pocket, and Jonathan Allen (blue) moves up to seal the sack:

Slater's pass pro, on the other hand, looked solid. Real solid. Here's Slater vs. Young. Slater showed quick footwork to mirror Young and keep him well away from Herbie:

Now here's an interesting pass pro blocking scheme that shows some creativity. Feiler (71) pulls all the way over from his LG spot to block Young, and Ekkie even gives Young a nice chip to knock him back a bit. Too bad Herbie threw a pick on this play, but the pass pro was actually pretty decent. Never saw this kind of blocking last year. I think this is a preview of some of the creative scheming Staley and staff will be dialing up, both O and D...

Ekkie is turning into a real nice pass pro blocker. He totally upends Kamren Curl on the safety blitz here:

Kyzir White made some nice plays; but he needs to clean up his tackling. Sometimes he overpursues and whiffs. Here he has Gibson in his sights after a short pass reception.

But no. White overpursues, whiffs, and lets Gibson slip by him for the first down:

Nice blocking on this run by Ekkie (yellow). Lindsley (red) and Aboushi (blue) seal off a nice hole, and Norton (white) keeps Young engaged long enough to spring Ekkie.

Ekkie is so strong, he pushes the pack several more yards for a nice gainer, and a first down:

Yep...Heinicke still holding the rock when Bosa lunges forward:

Heiny heaves the rock...now, tell me, HOW is Bosa supposed to stop on a dime here?

Bosa thinks he has a sack...

...but no...penalty on Bosa for "below the waist" roughing the passer...Bosa says, "WHAAAAAATTT?"

Gibson is good. He did his thing, we won.
