    Charger Power Rankings/Ratings entering 2021 Wk 4

After the win in KC, seeing most of the "Rankings" just about Top 10. For those who may think these mean much, Raiders are ranked higher in most of the subjective rankings, but the Broncos are lower because everyone thinks they haven't played anyone good, despite having an outstanding defense. I personally like the "Ratings", particularly DVOA best.

First set of Blurbs, next will be around 9am pac.

The Chargers looking good overall with McVay disciple Brandon Staley shouldn't surprise anyone. They have young gun QB Justin Herbert operating well in a skilled new-look offense and the defense is making enough big plays as it should. They are the Chiefs' true challengers in the AFC West over the undefeated Raiders and Broncos.

Patrick Mahomes challenged Justin Herbert to back up all the hype from fans this summer. That's exactly what Herbert did in Week 3. The second-year quarterback threw four touchdown passes, compiling 281 yards through the air. Pair his brilliance with the Chargers's secondary creating turnovers, that's a 30-24 win and a 2-1 record for Los Angeles.

Mike Williams is a good example of why coaching matters. The old staff seemed content to have the former No. 7 overall pick function primarily as a deep threat. He had moments of success but through four seasons it seemed like he was capable of more. A new staff expanded his route tree and now Williams looks like an elite receiver. That would give the Chargers two of them, because Keenan Allen is still a star.

The Chargers have been impressive enough to land in the top 10 of the NFL Power Rankings in Week 4. They probably should have looked better against Washington, especially given the Football Team subsequent performance. Yet, Week 1 was weird for a lot of NFL teams, so we'll let LAs opening performance go a bit. The Chargers have faced three teams that were considered playoff contenders before the season, and they have competed in each game.

On Sunday, Los Angeles went toe to toe against the Kansas City Chiefs. They got up early thanks to some timely turnovers and were able to hold onto momentum late in the game. On the other hand, the Chargers allowed 33 first downs on defense, well above the NFL average of 20.9 per game.

They are struggling to stop the run. Teams are averaging 5.8 yards per carry against them so far in 2021. While that's far from a death sentence, it's something to monitor because it can easily take the ball out of Justin Herbert's hands.

This NFL season has been nutty. How do the Chargers go from losing to the Cowboys at home to beating the Chiefs at Arrowhead? Well, I guess it helps if the other team is constantly committing turnovers. As great as winning at Kansas City is, the Chiefs handed the Chargers the victory on a silver platter.

Brandon Staley is in love with his quarterback. Can you blame him? For the second straight week, the Chargers' head coach made a point to call Justin Herbert the best player on the field, this time after Herbert powered the Bolts to a dramatic 30-24 win over the Chiefs in Arrowhead. It's not lip service by Staley, either: On multiple occasions Sunday, Staley opted to keep his offense on the field rather than settle for sensible field-goal attempts. It was a tacit acknowledgement of Patrick Mahomes' greatness, sure, but also a showing of supreme faith in his own guy. The Chargers converted first downs in each instance. The football world is quickly learning what Staley and the Power Rankings already knew: Justin Herbert Is A Savage In The Pocket.

That's a big-time win on the road against the Chiefs. Justin Herbert bounced out of his slow start with an impressive four-touchdown pass game.

It's only pass interference if they call it. And, yes, they should have called it.

The Bolts headed east to Arrowhead Stadium looking to renew the rivalry with the chiefs. A year ago, Justin Herbert and company won at Kansas City in week 17 when Andy Reid™'s team was resting some starters.

This time around, the Chargers gave up 437 total yards but also came up with four takeaways. Herbert threw for 281 yards and four scores -- two to Mike Williams -- the second with 32 seconds to play which proved to be the difference.

The AFC West has a new boss in the early going of our NFL power rankings, with the Las Vegas Raiders eclipsing the Kansas City Chiefs.

Huge win for the Bolts, who suddenly look like a threat to Kansas City in the AFC West.

"We're fortunate we have a gangster quarterback," new Bolts coach Brandon Staley said of Justin Herbert after Sunday's win at Kansas City. OK, sure, Coach. But for context, Herbert's the same guy who founded a fishing club in high school.

      Team QBR: 53.1
      QBR rank: 20th

Justin Herbert was terrific on Sunday versus the Chiefs, completing 26 of 38 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns with zero turnovers. He had a better completion percentage in a loss against Dallas the week before, but turnovers and penalties took two touchdowns away. Everything indicates his numbers will continue to grow. He has completed 69.8% of his passes through three games. "We are fortunate enough to have a gangster quarterback," coach Brandon Staley said. Herbert took his team through two crucial fourth-down plays on the final drive of Sunday's win in Kansas City and didn't blink. "We want to put the ball in Justin Herbert's hand and have him be the decider," Staley emphasized. -- Shelley Smith

I could easily have made the case for the Chargers at 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10. Hebert would be the centerpiece of any such rationale. He reminds me so much of Mahomes: great arm, creative flair, some doubts lingering coming out of college, fiery start to a budding NFL career. But Herbert is also part of the reason I have the LAC just a touch lower than most do. He's still a young quarterback, and he still plays on a developing team. Plus, there's the schedule: Raiders, Browns, Ravens (away) and Patriots upcoming. I still believe the Chiefs will win the AFC West. But I also believe the Chargers will challenge them, starting this season, and that Hebert will be a major reason why. I'll also look forward to years of Mahomes-Hebert shoot-outs, in much the same way I looked forward to Tom Brady's decades of tough games with division rivals. Oh, wait ... whoops ... - Greg Bishop

Sunday's trip to Arrowhead was a big game for the Los Angeles Chargers. Lose a second straight game, and the Bolts would fall to 1-2 and again look the part of an also-ran in the division. Notch an upset victory, on the other hand, and it would be the Chiefs who fell to 1-2 and the AFC West would be blown wide open.

      That second one happened.

Offensively, Justin Herbert outplayed Patrick Mahomes, throwing for 281 yards and four scores. Wide receiver Mike Williams continued his torrid start to the season, hauling in a pair of TD passes, including the game-winner with 32 seconds left.

Defensively, Los Angeles was all up in Mahomes' business, sacking him twice, harassing him consistently and picking him off two times. It was an outstanding all-around effort that cemented the Bolts as legitimate contenders in the AFC.

"The Chargers are a couple of illegal shift calls away from being 3-0," Davenport said. "Herbert is playing as well as any quarterback in the league, and the L.A. offense is rolling. If they can get a little more consistency on defense, this team has what it takes to make a deep playoff run."

"If you slay the two-time defending conference champs in their own building, you have to move ahead of that team in power rankings," Gagnon added. "It's a legal thing. But, man, the Chargers look like they have something very special in the making with this core and regime. I'm not sure about the Broncos or Raiders just yet, but it's beginning to look like Bolts-Chiefs could be a hell of a rivalry for years to come in the AFC West."

^ This. Lynn tried to force Mike Will into a deep, high-pointing threat...had some success, but Staley and Lombo have used his strengths and, what a difference...

The problem with pigeonholing people is it makes you predictable. Every receiver should have every route available. Duh.

I think part of this decision is that Hunter Henry is no longer a target for Justin. Our current TE's don't have HH's talent, and probably should be helping more at the LOS anyway, so Mike now has to step into that intermediate threat for chunk yardage which still needs better route running, which we hadn't seen from him 'til now. Our TEs still can get out into space, but not as a primary target.

Hot damn, we did the thing. It wasn't a mistake-free performance, but it wasn't needed. The Chargers defense took the ball away four times from the normally mistake-free Chiefs and outlasted their comeback attempt. Justin Herbert tossed four touchdowns, two of which went to Mike "Contract Year" Williams. This is a statement win, but there's so much more season to go and more work to be done. The Chargers will be under the lights nationally as they host the surging Raiders on MNF next week.

I think they are about 12-14 range -- last one or two teams in the WC. Need to see up to the bye week. Can't play good against KC and lay an against the Raiders. Need to stack good games.

I think we never fully found out because he was oft injured, but I think he would have been an asset, I think this current staff is a bit smarter on how to use their players than the previous staff.

Exactly part of the reason but he was also talked about like he was a Jason Witten clone which was far off from reality.

Still needs some more time to prove himself further but I'm glad we can spend the money that HH wanted on Mike Williams instead. HH leaving was a good outcome.
