Look How Much the Vikes Stacked the Box Against Us! Ridiculous!

When Lombo keeps dialing up mostly short and perimeter passes, it doesn't take opposing teams too long how to shut down that game plan. They do it by stacking the box most of the time. Our playcalling vs. the box is so ridiculous and predictable. Come on, Lombo! Is that the best u can do? Gotta STRETCH the D, for crying out loud, with the LONG BALL! HELLO!!!!!!!

Look how much the Vikes stacked the box against us, like this incomplete to Mike Will, with a PI for us:

    2nd and 10 inc. to Mike Will.JPG

    More box-stacking here:

    vikes stack box 1.JPG

And here, where Herbie got picked:

    herbie picked...mid range pass.JPG

Here's one way to beat the box...Herbie scrambles:

    herbie keeper first down.JPG

Now, on 3rd and long, the Vikes did drop back into a Gus-like Picket Fence:

    3rd and long.JPG

Awful game planning and adjustments by Lombo and Staley both.

I don't understand why we do not throw deep once in a while??

We are not using Guyton to stretch Defense at all....

We did it quite well last year, even with inferior OL...

    Go Bolts!!!

we have not enough speed at WR...... last year we had 2 fast guys and defenses had to leave at least one of them one on one.....

I don't think we had both Guyton and T-Billy in at the same time...

Thanks. One thing I forgot to mention is that stacking the box really takes away the Bolt ground game...they're just daring us to throw long...and Herbie is one of the best long ball slingers in the league...come on, Lombo, use yer talent!!!!!

I think this is also an indictment of our wide receivers (at least for this game). Our guys aren't scaring anyone off the LOS.

                It's a combination of:

                1. Dropped passes
                2. Not enough long routes

When they stack the box like that, most of your short passes are doomed because there's a glut of LB's and safeties in coverage...if our wideouts were to run more long routes, or even mid-range to long routes (and that's on Lombo and Staley), they could break through to the next level where there's just a single high safety. All we need is for a RB or TE to help Norton in blocking, and we should hit on at least 50-70% of those plays, maybe more...

One thing too is that Lombardi kept us in bunch formations close in. That is great at certain times but it really makes it even easier to bunch up in the box on defense. We should have been running more spread formations as the game went on to get them out of the box and all bunched up like that.

Great point there, Fouts! For example, how about a Trip formation? Send the slot man across the field to keep the LB's busy, then send one on a post and another on a sideline go route...no way that single high safety can cover the last two...lame playcalling, plain and simple...

So it is our OC plan not to throw deep??

I still can't comprehend... Did he forget that he didn't have Brees but Herbert now?!?

                      Go Bolts!!!

I get that the short pass game can be highly effective, eating up the clock, long drives, giving your D a breather, etc....BUT...if they're stacking the box on you, you have to throw it deep or medium-deep a few times until they drop back the LB's more, and especially, drop back their safeties...
