Chargers Power Rankings / Ratings Going into Wk 12

Even though the Chargers won, the Colts leapfrogged them in many of the rankings. First group is those who publish before MNF:

    ----
Dalton Miller - Pro Football Network 10 (LW 11)

There are two teams you can almost set your watch to disappoint you late in the fourth quarter of a game. The Chargers and the Falcons can have their names used as verbs, and everyone will know exactly what you mean.

With about 10 minutes left in the game, it looked like 5.5 points was a given cover for the Chargers, but they went and decided "Chargering" was more important. A blocked punt started the party, but they went right down the field and scored to thwart that momentum.

But there was too much game left. A funky interception seemed to change Los Angeles' fate, and then a missed fourth-down conversion seemingly sealed it.

But Justin Herbert, or more accurately, the Steelers' defensive miscommunication, flipped the page once again. This is a talented football team with one of the most impressive young talents in the league at quarterback. But they still have to fight off the curse the franchise has long been under. They won, but it was incredibly ugly at the end.

    ----
Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 10 (LW 11)

The Chargers needed every bit of dynamic playmaking from Justin Herbert and Austin Ekeler to hold off a furious Steelers comeback Sunday night. Their reward for Brandon Staley finding enough defense in the end is getting closer to the playoffs while still trailing the Chiefs

    Matt Johnson - Sportsnaut 12 (LW 11)
Our latest NFL power rankings provide an outlook for all 32 teams, rebuilders and Super Bowl contenders entering the offseason.

It wasn't always pretty and beating the Steelers on Sunday Night Football doesn't mean what it used to, but this was a nice moment for the Los Angeles Chargers. The Justin Herbert-Austin Ekeler combo was outstanding and this team created some much-needed separation in the NFL standings from the Raiders.

    ----
    Russell S. Baxter - Fansided 11 (LW 10)
Stop us if you heard this before. Those upsets keep coming around the league. And once again, there’s a change atop the NFL Power Rankings.

The Bolts were home and played host to the Steelers on Sunday night. Justin Herbert and the offense had few problems moving the football against a short-handed Pittsburgh defense. Austin Ekeler had a big evening, amassing 115 total yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Herbert finished with 382 yards through the air and 90 yards rushing. And he hit Mike Williams with the deciding touchdown pass with 2:09 to play.

    Second group, the individual writers:

    ----
Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 13 (LW 12)

No matter that the Chargers tried to give away a win, they got a win and every one will matter in the playoff race. They got an enormous break when the Steelers miscommunicated on a blitz and left Mike Williams wide open for what would be the game-winning score, but credit Justin Herbert for recognizing it and delivering the ball for the touchdown.

    ---
Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 11 (LW 14)

Justin Herbert rebounded nicely, dominating the Steelers with both his arm and his legs. Some may see a 41-37 score and not really be impressed, but the Chargers outgained Pittsburgh, 535-300. The Chargers kept the Steelers around with the blocked punt and the tipped interception.

    ----
Nate Davis - USA Today 13 (LW 12)

In yet another remarkable performance Sunday night, QB Justin Herbert became the first player in Super Bowl era to pass for 350 yards and rush for 90 in the same game. And he's definitely breaking mold for the Bolts, who'd never had a QB run for at least 90 in team's 62-season history

    ----
Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 9 (LW 11)

Now that Justin Herbert is back throwing it around, they can play with anybody. The coaches wised up by getting back to featuring Herbert throwing it down the field.

    ----
    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 11 (LW 11)
In his Week 12 Power Rankings, Dan Hanzus makes changes at No. 1 and No. 32, with a whole lot of reshuffling in between. And yes, Bill Belichick's New England Patriots are back in the contender tier.

The Chargers were ready to Charger in a profound way ... until Justin Herbert stepped in. The brilliant second-year quarterback saved the day with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams that thwarted a furious Steelers rally and allowed the Bolts to escape with a 41-37 win on Sunday Night Football. The fourth quarter unfolded in ways both unique and deeply familiar if you're a Chargers fan; it felt as if a meltdown in front of 40,000 Steelers fans invading Southern California was preordained. But Herbert is different. He makes the Chargers different. He accounted for 472 total yards and three touchdowns and -- even more impressively -- showed unshakable cool when the world was on fire. He's a franchise quarterback in every way.

    ----
Bryan Fischer - Athlon Sports 9 (LW 11)

The question isn't just if Justin Herbert is one of the league's bright young stars but rather how high he'll climb in the ranks as the next generation of QBs takes over. As critical as he's been to the team's success though, it's on Brandon Staley to figure out a fix for the defense that keeps putting this group in shootouts by their own making.

    ----
    Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 11 (LW 11)
As we approach Thanksgiving, the Kansas City Chiefs are heating up while the Buffalo Bills wonder what went wrong on Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers are bizarre, but they're also 6-4 and still fighting for the AFC West.

    ----
    Mike Florio - PFT/NBC Sports 14 (LW 17)

The Chargers managed to win a huge road game at home.

Most memorable Thanksgiving game: Chargers beat Cowboys 28-6 on Nov. 23, 2017

The Chargers defeated a beat-up Dallas team in their first Thanksgiving game in 48 years. Philip Rivers threw for 434 yards on 27-of-33 passing, and Keenan Allen caught 11 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown. They bested a Cowboys team without several key players, including running back Ezekiel Elliott, who was sidelined due to a six-game suspension stemming from a domestic violence investigation. Before that, the most recent time the Chargers played on Thanksgiving was in 1969, when they beat the Oilers in the Astrodome 21-17. -- Shelley Smith

Even setting aside the wacky events that got the Steelers back into it on Sunday night, this is still a team that feels a little too dependent on the quarterback's heroics (even if the quarterback is very, very good). Justin Herbert plus bend-don't-break (in theory) defense isn't the worst formula, it's just going to lead to a lot of coin-flip games. -- Gary Gramling

      ----
Bleacher Report Consensus 12 (LW 11)
Some weeks, everything goes according to plan in the NFL . Contenders win. Pretenders lose. All is right with the universe. Week 11 was most assuredly not one of those weeks. Where to even begin? The No...

Like so many NFL teams in 2021, the Los Angeles Chargers have been up and down. There was the up of a 4-1 start that included wins over Cleveland, Las Vegas and Kansas City. And the down of a 1-3 stretch after that included a blowout loss in Baltimore and home defeats at the hands of Minnesota and New England.

Sunday night's win over Pittsburgh was in some ways a microcosm for the season. For most of the game, the Chargers did just about whatever they wanted offensively, piling up a whopping 533 yards of offense.

But the Chargers also blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead, and it took a late touchdown pass from Herbert to Mike Williams to pull out a four-point win and keep the pressure on the Chiefs in the AFC West.

However, while the win was far from flawless, Sobleski thinks it shows that the Bolts have to be taken seriously in the AFC bracket.

"The Chargers remain very dangerous in the muddled AFC," he said. "A win Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers placed Los Angeles right back into the thick of things as a legitimate playoff contender. With the team's backfield of quarterback Justin Herbert and running back Austin Ekeler, the Chargers offense is extremely difficult to defend based on their varied skill sets. As long as the defense plays well enough, Los Angeles can beat anyone."

      ----
Danny Kelly - The Ringer Consensus 11 (LW 12)
Indianapolis has dug itself out of an 0-3 hole and jumped into the postseason picture. Plus: The Cardinals have weathered Kyler Murray’s injury and the 49ers are a sneaky NFC postseason contender.

Again, don't take Aikman's thing too seriously. They may put numbers next to things, but unless they tell you how they calculate it, they don't mean anything. The beauty of the whole analytics thing is using numbers to understand the things going on in the game. If they can't tell you why Tenn is ranked 13th on D, and 16th on O, yet has the best record in the AFC tells you that there has to be something more to the story, and just throwing a number up their means nothing by itself. The whole math is a language thing.

The D has had a lot of breakdowns and was not played very well. They played much, much better vs Pitt. A few relatively minor breakdowns, mostly in coverage. But mostly we were covering guys, stepping in and defending the gaps in the run game. As well ranked as the O is, we are really two different offenses. The one that dinks and dunks down the field, and the one that can protect Herbert and let us throw downfield and run the ball some.

The key for every team in the AFC is to play well down the stretch. Obviously, the teams with the best chances are teams who have done better starting out, but it will come down to who continues to improve and can continue to play well to the end of the season. It might be us, but only time will tell. But the fact that they put together their best, most complete game now certainly helps the case for it. But it is up to the players and coaches to continue to improve to get better every week.

Well for one we have been terrible on third downs. We got to be near the bottom there. In fact i looked it up, we are second to last. The last 3 games its over 51%. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/sta...conversion-pct

Rush defense has been better but we are still last in rush yards allowed and tied for 2nd to last in YPC given up. 3rd to last in rushing TDs allowed,

                  These might explain something.

The San Diego Chargers have the fewest opponent punts by a team in a season, with 27 punts in 1982.

Not only are the Chargers last in the league in run stopping/defense. The team also leads the league in fewest punts forced on the opponent.

The defense is bad. How bad? Opinions will vary.

Well, that was fun. The nation got to see some offensive fireworks from the blue and gold, as Justin Herbert and Austin Ekeler made a lot of fantasy owners very happy. Everyone also got to see the Chargers almost Charger themselves, but a neat little bomb to Mike Williams in crunchtime kept that from happening. It is worth noting that the Chargers are stilly playing very sloppy ball, and that was a big part in Pittsburgh staying in it, and kudos to them on playing tough for four quarters. The win puts the Chargers squarely in the division race, just in time for a divisional trip to Denver.
