Chargers Power Rankings / Ratings Going Into Wk 14

These are before Monday Night Football:

The Chargers' game against the Bengals reminded me of the Formula 1 race that ended just hours before. It was chaotic. There were MASSIVE momentum swings, but eventually, the team that jumped out to the early lead won because they allowed the other to make the critical mistakes.

That is not meant to dissolve (sic) the Chargers of their ... Chargering. They still turned the ball over 3 times and blew a 22-point lead. I didn't know who this team was before this game, and I'm still not sure if I do. I love their offensive potential. Heck, I even love their offense as it is, with coordinator Joe Lombardi taking some of the firepower away from Justin Herbert.

But LA's defense is still struggling. They don't defend the run, and they don't really have the talent to consistently see good results against the pass. The Chargers have a ton of potential, but I'm not sure if they're ready to truly compete in the AFC.

Bring some bodies in defensively and grab an upgrade to Jalen Guyton (who played well today), and we're looking at a potential Super Bowl contender in 2022.

The Chargers are doing their best to stay firmly in the playoff picture and a big reason why is how well the offense is operating with Justin Herbert working to Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler. But how about the defense coming out and swarming Joe Burrow make their talented second-year QB was the one winning and more comfortable to make big plays.

It had been weeks since the Los Angeles Chargers last won a meaningful game. But true to form with a team that goes on wild hot and cold spells, it came through against an underrated Bengals' roster. Sitting at 8-5 (sic), Los Angeles must take advantage of the terrible Giants in Week 14.

Last week, Justin Herbert and company had a rough afternoon at Denver. Now the Chargers made their way to Cincinnati to face the potent Bengals. Brandon Staley's team opened up a 24-0 lead but watched Cincinnati mount a comeback.

Staley's club was hanging on by two points when Bengals' running back Joe Mixon fumbled in the fourth quarter. Tevaughn Campbell returned the prize 61 yards for a score. The Chargers forced four turnovers.

Most Rankers popped the Chargers to near top-ten, leapfrogging the Bengals, and some, the Bills. Colts are usually ranked higher than the Chargers.

    Individual writers:

    ----
Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 12 (LW 19)

The Chargers get a depleted Giants team this week, then host the Chiefs in Week 15 in a great Thursday night game. If the Chargers win both of those games, they'll be in first place of the AFC West (thanks to clinching the tiebreaker over the Chiefs) with three games to go. That win at Cincinnati on Sunday was huge.

    ---
Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 9 (LW 11)

Thank goodness the Chargers didn't blow their win (and more importantly, cover) after going up 24-0. For a while, it looked like it was going to happen, but injuries to Joe Burrow and Joe Mixon saved the day. Had the Chargers not covered, that would have been the worst bad beat I've ever suffered. Instead, the Chargers hung on for the win. I'd say they got some lucky breaks, they also lost some fumbles along the way.

Nate Davis - USA Today 11 (LW 15)

Want to find some consistency from this bunch? Well, since Week 5, they've won in all odd-numbered weeks and lost in all even-numbered ones. But Sunday's home date with the faltering Giants could be welcome tendency breaker for the Bolts.

    ----
Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 11 (LW 15)

They impressed in beating the Bengals on the road. The defense made some big plays, including a fumble return for a score, to win that one.

Dan Hanzus updates the 2021 NFL season hierarchy with his Week 14 Power Rankings. Are the Dolphins rolling toward a playoff berth? Can the Vikings or Raiders right the ship?

The Chargers flew to Cincinnati to ride a roller coaster. Brandon Staley's team nearly blew a 24-point lead, but a massive touchdown on a fumble recovery by Tevaughn Campbell changed everything in a 41-22 win over the Bengals. It might have been the play of the year for the Bolts, but it wasn't the only promising development to come out of the victory: Justin Herbert and the big-play attack were back after a frustrating sabbatical. Herbert averaged over 9 yards per attempt and showcased his top-shelf arm strength on an absurd 44-yard TD strike to Jalen Guyton in the second quarter. As CBS analyst Charles Davis deftly put it during the telecast: "That call is not in everyone's playbook."

    ----
Bryan Fischer - Athlon Sports 9 (LW 15)

The Chargers went from "whoa, look at them," to "same old Chargers," to "well now" in a pretty quick span against Cincinnati. The key is to keep building upon games like that however as that hasn't quite been the case this year.

As the contenders and pretenders start separating, we look at the NFL power rankings going into Week 14 with an idea of the playoff pictures.

The Chargers get a huge win in Cincy, and they're right in the mix for the AFC West title.

    Mike Florio - PFT/NBC Sports 12 (LW 17)

This rollercoaster likely has a few more ups and downs left.

      Early Consensus Rankings:

      ----
ESPN Nation Consensus 13 (LW 16)
OBJ wants to prove he's still a marquee guy, Zach Wilson is looking for momentum in New York and Jessie Bates III hopes for a big finish to his contract year.

Player who must step up: RB Justin Jackson

Jackson was thought to be the No. 2 running back behind Austin Ekeler but missed two straight games with shoulder injuries, and Jackson has yet to play more than 16% of offensive snaps in any contest. He had six carries for 15 yards against the Bengals. The Chargers are in great need for a solid No. 2 back, and Ekeler has the tools; but he can't get on the field. -- Shelley Smith

The latest NFL news, scores, schedules, fantasy football, and mock drafts.

The Chargers find themselves in a similar position to all the teams ranked around them, up or down, in the immediate vicinity. Fresh off an emphatic drubbing of the Bengals, they must lean on a budding superstar at quarterback (Justin Herbert), a running back likely to win more than a few fantasy football playoffs (Austin Ekeler), a defensive guru in Coach Brandon Staley, and a talented roster that sometimes plays to its potential - and sometimes looks more like a pretender. A meh upcoming schedule should help cement a playoff bid. Also of note: Herbert became only the third signal caller in NFL history with at least 25 touchdown passes in his first two seasons (others: Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson), per the NFL. -- Greg Bishop

      ----
Bleacher Report Consensus 11 (LW 14)
The Week 13 schedule in the NFL wasn't exactly a barnburner. There were all of two games that involved a pair of teams inside the playoffs: Sunday's tilt between the Los Angeles ...

The Los Angeles Chargers are becoming quite the yo-yo.

Since their Week 7 bye, the Chargers have alternated losses and wins. There was a home loss to the Patriots, then a win in Philly over the Eagles. Then another loss at home to the Vikings. Then a wild win over the Steelers. Then a lopsided road loss to the Broncos. And now a decisive win on the road over a good Cincinnati Bengals team.

The Chargers peeled off the first 24 points of the game against the Bengals. They also sacked Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow six times and forced four turnovers, including a Joe Mixon fumble returned for a score that all but ended the Bengals' comeback effort.

While speaking to CBS Sports' Evan Washburn after the game, Chargers safety Derwin James said the team needs to play at this level more consistently.

"Everybody's seen the type of team we have today," James said. "... We just have to be consistent with it. All four quarters, not two quarters."

"The Chargers are easily one of the NFL's most intriguing teams," Brent Sobleski said. "Justin Herbert is truly special with his playmaking ability and natural arm talent. Along with a strong supporting cast, the Chargers can score on anyone. The defense is well-coached by Brandon Staley, too. They can face any opponent and beat them. They just need to be more consistent."

      ----
Danny Kelly - The Ringer Consensus 11 (LW 14)
The Cardinals head into the homestretch looking like one of the most well-rounded teams in the league. Plus, Jonathan Taylor is playing on god mode and Washington is on the verge of a playoff spot.

Don't let the score fool you, this was almost some classic Chargering. The team nearly lost a 24 point lead in what became a messy, turnover-filled game. The league's worst run defense was the best unit of the day, bottling up Cincinnati's ground game and taking a Joe Mixon fumble to the house. Keenan Allen caught two touchdowns and is on his way to another 1000 yard season. The Chargers will host the Giants next week as they aim to keep pace in the wide open AFC.

The Athletic Consensus 12 (LW 15)

Best-case scenario: The Chargers have arguably the highest ceiling of any team in the AFC wild-card chase, but they've been maddeningly inconsistent, alternating wins and losses over the past six weeks. The best-case scenario for the Chargers is finding a groove and staying in it. That will require better protection of Justin Herbert but also more trust in their second-year quarterback to let it rip, much like he did in Sunday's win over the Bengals. The Chargers should be heavily favored in two of their next three games (against the Giants in Week 14, and the Texans in Week 16) and the AFC West is even within reach if they can play up to their offensive potential against the Chiefs in Week 15.
