R.I.P. John Madden. Really nothing you can say bad about the man, other than he was a Raider, lol. But by extension, he was also an Aztec, as an assistant coach. The Holy Roller still bugs me, even though I was just a teen.

When I was a pre-teen in the late 1960s and began to develop an interest in football, playing Pop Warner, Al Davis made John Madden the youngest head coach in the NFL. I remember it well. Madden had been a coach at San Diego State University just a few years earlier under Don Coryell. He always spoke well of Coryell. Madden was HC of the Raiders at the time of the Holy Roller game in 1978. Two weeks later Coryell became HC of the Chargers after Tommy Prothro abruptly resigned. Madden resigned at the end of the 1978 season, citing burnout. He was known for getting worked up on the side lines during games, gesturing with his hands wildly and yelling at the officials. He capitalized on that visual by making a series of TV commercials for a new product - Lite Beer - citing the praises of low calorie suds while waving his arms and speaking to the camera in a frenzy.. He capitalized on the success of those commercials to become an unlikely TV pitchman. Everybody knows about his broadcasting career, though I guess some of the young 'uns might not even remember him in that role. While it's customary to be sad when someone like Madden dies, the passing of a person like Madden, who lived a long time, had a great life, and left his mark on the world, is not really a sad event, he lived a life we should celebrate and that is what I think we should do.

RIP Coach Madden
Great ambassador for the NFL
Head Coach - highest winning % of all time - he won like 103-32-7 - that was in a 14 game season he averaged 10 wins per year
TV Guy - he and Summerall - you knew it was a big game
