Here’s the simplest way to evaluate Telesco.

Would any other NFL team hire him as GM if Chargers canned him? Hell no!

He’s the GM here for one reason….so Johnny Spanos can influence every decision Telesco makes.

I think it will be between 2 and 3. They have a lot more cap space this offseason than last. And yes, Derwin James will come due either this offseason or next offseason. But the Chargers and Telesco can be smart like they did with OL: $, $$ and $$$ signings for the OL in Aboushi, Feiler, and Linsley. Do the same on defense

But also how much money can he spend? Will Dean allow the Chargers to push the cap like the Chiefs and Saints do.

So is Chandler Jones beyond their budget? he's 31, and a gamble, but still shows no signs of slowing down;

and how about Terron Armstead? also 31 - the Saints threw all their money into Ramzyk's basket.

I think this is where Telesco needs to be VERY smart and look at the age of the player

the data shows that older teams, on average, do not fare better

The Chargers probably are moving on from Cook, Bulaga, Harris and Joseph. I personally think they need to get younger. Younger players get hurt less often.
Look at JJ Watt - was playing well but he got hurt
Chandler Jones - well over 30, same with Armstead

I really think Telesco needs to hit the players like 27 to maybe 30 when the season starts with the bigger money, premier signings.

Like for ege, I think I look at Hassan Reddick over Chandler Jones for instance. Telesco has a lot of cap space - its just how Dean allows him to use it

If you fire Telesco, you have to start entertaining the possibility of parting ways with Staley.
A GM should hire his own coaching staff, and after the punctuation point of last night, he might not want to ride with Staley, Lombo & Hill.

Beathard kept Dan Henning around for a season, then got rid of him.
After last night, maybe they should clean house.

Generally this is what happens but there’s been exceptions where a new GM comes in after the HC is already hired. Buffalo for one.

Option 2 wasn’t bad. I thought it was one of the better offseasons on his part. He would need to at least meet that this year, if not outright exceed it.
