Is a "Deebo Samuel" WR/RB Already on the Chargers?

The 49ers have had great success lately using wide receiver Deebo Samuel as a running back. He does not just run jet sweeps out of the backfield. He is used on both inside and outside runs, and can also run pass routes out of the backfield. That versatility allows for a lot of creativity in play-calling.

Being a copycat league, it is inevitable that some teams will look for the next Deebo Samuel in the draft.

I wonder if the Chargers could run some of those plays with someone already on their roster. Someone named Joe Reed.

Maybe they think so too. He was signed today to a reserve/future contract today, after spending some of the past season on the practice squad. He hasn't shown a lot yet, but maybe they'll give him more of a chance to make next year's 53. Could take some of the work load off of Ekeler, and give defenses something else to worry about.

Has he shown anything at the pro level to suggest this might work?

I think he spent the entire season on IR. Not sure how Staley might use him but worth an audition.

that guy Deebo is kinda build like a running back...5'11" 214..and he ran a 4.5 40 or something. Most receivers are a bit thin in the build /in the legs but he is a bit stout...so sure...a guy like that could easily be a back who is great coming out of the backfield. The question would be...find someone who would WANT to...thats a tough deal running thru those DL's and linebackers...short career! :>)

Don't be surprised if the Bengals start using Ja'Marr Chase in a Deebo Samuel like capacity. They have already done it to some extent, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of Chase carrying the ball in the playoffs.

You find a use for Reed, or you call it a mistake and let him go.

If they re-signed him to a 'futures contract', it means they have no problems with his work ethic, accountability, and overall effort. If they questioned any of those at this point, they'd just send him packing.
