Wait until he has to cover Tyreek Hill.

But I like the acquisition. Last season was an absolute disaster at CB. Embarrassing.

Yeah, that's the thing. Sometimes guys that thrive with the Patriots go on to mediocre post-Patriot careers. Also, for most of his time at the Patriots JC was not the #1 corner. That was Gilmore. So he had less challenging match ups

The ball tracking is key for JC Jackson in LAC.
He doesnt need to be elite cover for 6+ seconds with this pass rush. 3 seconds tops is all opposing QB's will have and that will force more errant throws. JC can easily track and adjust to the ball in the air. If he has avg season and get 5-6 INT thats 5-6 more chances for Herbert to throw TD. How many more games we win with 5-6 more TD's?

But here are a few things I have heard and read since he announced he is coming to the Chargers (not listing all the accolades, since those are all pretty well known and discussed already)

            1. If you watch his highlight films, a lot of his INTs seem to be tipped or batted and he is in the right place at the right time. And makes the catch. And a few came against the rookie QB from the Jets and they were just awful throws. Did not see too many where he had blanket coverage?
            2. Charles Davis, who I like a lot, said Jackson really struggled against Diggs when they played the Bills and he called those games. So he wondered how he will do against Tyreek Hill?
            3. Some said that Jackson, while very good, is a product of the Belicheck system that made players like Malcolm Butler look great. The counter to that is that Staley expects a lot of his DBs and does some Belicheck type things so it might just be the perfect fit.
            4. NE media (former Patriots players like Nikovitch and Bruschi and the like) said Jackson was starting to get a bit big in the britches and showing up late for sessions with trainers and stuff. Not big deals but red flags to them. However, Belicheck does not tolerate that and it sounds pretty ticky tacky to me.
            5. Some question him locking down the best player from the other team each week. Translation he is not Jalen Ramsey.
            6. And of course, several said that this is another good player that Belicheck made look great and he won't be great without the great Belicheck and Belicheck didnt think he was great enough to keep.

1). You can't coach int. He gets them of tips, but a lot of them he is in the right spot because he plays tight coverage and is in the right spot behind the WR. But you can't coach them.

2). The Bills crushed the Pats because NE runs almost exclusively man coverage and they beat it with crossing routes and fades. But the split secondaries can take away those coverages, especially if they can pressure the QB, so those longer developing routes aren't open yet.

3). BB is great at teaching guys to play with flawless technique and Jackson has flawless technique. If he has a weakness in man, it is that he lacks elite speed, so guys like Hill and Hardman are going to force us to give him some deep help, because Jackson can't run with them for long. BUt he will make up for it somewhat by knocking them off their routes early in the route. Jackson probably has the best chuck at the line of any DB in the NFL.

            4). ????

5). Even Jalen Ramsey got beat in the SB. THere is no such thing as a shutdown CB in the NFL anymore. Jackson is as good a press coverage player as there is. His other coverages are not good, but if you go after a guy like Jackson, you aren't going to ask him to play a lot of zone.

6). As long as he continues to work on his technique and play press as well as he does, we should be in good shape. The biggest issue I have with Jackson as a CB is he forces us to play more man and combo coverages. If you are going to make that work, you need other CB to play man, preferably press man to man, and knock the WR off their routes. No matter how good he is, Jackson is only one of 6 or 7 players in pass coverage for us, the rest of the guys need to do their job too.

Yep, that's our guy now! Very nice technique, loved seeing the picks vs. Mahomes and Josh Allen.

Ted Nguyen thinks he’s a great scheme fit.
The Chargers got J.C. Jackson on a deal for less than expected, and JuJu Smith-Schuster has an opportunity to make his mark with the Chiefs.

                      Chargers: J.C. Jackson, CB

Contract: Five years, $82.5 million ($40 million guaranteed)

Average annual value rank: Sixth (among CBs)

                      Scheme: Two-high

I wanted to include only smaller deals in this article, but I was pretty stunned when J.C. Jackson didn’t get a bigger contract. Jackson is one of the best corners to hit the market in a while and was expected to reset the market. He checks all the boxes for a top-of-the-market corner. He’s young (26), specializes in man coverage and has elite ball production (25 interceptions and 23 passes defended in four seasons). Instead, Jackson essentially got the same deal that Byron Jones signed in 2020. He has the latest elite corner contract, but his average annual value ranks only sixth among cornerbacks.

Perhaps Jackson’s deal set the precedent for all the other cornerback deals that followed, but the position as a whole didn’t make as much as expected this offseason. Maybe some of the value and money are being shifted toward versatile safeties as the league is playing more two-high defenses. Still, having a corner who can lock down a No. 1 receiver one-on-one gives any defense many more options.

Here, the Chargers are in a two-high defense. The offense is in a four-by-one formation with a tight end, running back and two receivers lined up to the offense left and one receiver to the left. After the snap, the weakside safety opens up the single receiver to help the corner.

Against similar formations, Chargers coach Brandon Staley could turn safety help away from Jackson and add numbers in coverage to the multiple-receiver sides.

This diagram is from Nick Saban’s Alabama playbook. Staley and many other defensive coordinators who use man-match coverages are heavily influenced by Saban.

In the diagram, the corner to the single receiver plays man coverage without safety help. The safety is responsible for playing a deep crosser from the multiple-receiver sides. This makes things simpler for the strong safety because he has to worry only about the No. 2 receiver. This is just one example of the options Staley has when he knows that he can trust his corner to cover one-on-one on the outside. Adding Jackson makes everyone’s lives easier.

Yup. And if the weakside WR runs a crosser, he's running straight into a zone. Rotating the weak safety into the strong side cross zone is exactly what we were missing.
